massachusetts institute of technology freshman admissions portal/community v. 2.0

"Open Forum for those Not Admitted"

With a 17% increase in applications, this year was once again the most competitive ever for MIT admissions. Admitting only 1 in 10 applicants from our amazing applicant pool means that we had to turn away many, many, many incredible students. For those of you who fall into this category, this is an open forum for you to talk.

Anyway, I don't know how I will feel towards MIT from now on.... I know surely that I didn't deserve MIT, is it a good thing that they didn't admit me? because if they did they would have admitted a non-deserving student...
ahh I am thinking too much, but am I going to love MIT insanely as before .........

Posted by: Husain Bani Hashem on March 14, 2009 02:02 PM

Wow. MIT just made a huge mistake. 10 years from now when I basicallyrun this world, I will ruin this school.

Even though I was rejected I want to thank the admissions officers for their hard work. These blogs are amazing and provided me with hours of procrastination through the application process.

Waiting for RPI decisions now

Posted by: Kelly on March 14, 2009 02:06 PM

Oh well.

I guess that's how it has to be.

So many applicants, so few spots . . . .

Posted by: nikko on March 14, 2009 02:07 PM

It hurts, but I must move on. Congratulations to all the admitted students. You guys will have the best education ever - make the most of it!

There's a place, somewhere over the rainbow waiting for me where I'll be happy.

This is probably my very last post on these blogs. They've given me so much joy and it breaks my heart to let them go - but I must.

Adieu. I loved you more than you loved me.

Rejected at MIT... dreams come crashing down. I leave it at that.

thanks though for everything.

@whoo!: I'm not angry at all. I really feel super peaceful right now, comparing to the anxiety that lasted a week. I like the word rejected because I am rejected. "Not admitted" is just too complicated, and annoying.

I don't know !! I am having a stupid feeling tears rolling down my eyes

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 02:10 PM

Thank you MIT for considering us. Thank you for improving this world with your valuable education. I wish the best for admitted students!

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 02:10 PM

Husain Bani Hashem,

Hang in there buddy. No student is any more deserving than the next and I'm certain that there are plenty of other excellent schools out there that would love to have you. Just remember, it's not the name of the institution on your degree, but rather what you do with that degree that determines the value of your education. Go out there and study for another school just as you would have for MIT and I'm sure that you'll make yourself proud. MIT or not, you're still a worthy student and your future success will make another school thankful that they had chosen to admit you.

Just hand in there! :)

Posted by: BrittanyM on March 14, 2009 02:10 PM

To the guy that is going to rule the world and ruin this school: once you rule the world please make Switzerland, or any other extremely neutral country, the capital. I think everyone in here wants such an ironic event to happen.

goodbye MIT.

Posted by: Geoffrey on March 14, 2009 02:11 PM

Well, I was rejected.... But I'm honestly taking this a lot better than I thought I was going to. I just got a letter from Dartmouth this morning, so basically:

=D =D =D (from Dartmouth) + =( (MIT) still equals =D =D

I know a lot of well-deserving people who got in this year, who are better matches for MIT than I ever was. Congratulations to them.

Plus, I was deferred from Early, so I've been waiting since November. At least I was finally able to get some closure.

its ok to be rejected but the worst thing is waiting more than 4 months to see at last a disappointing letter, what a waste!

REJECTED.

MIT:The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application, and I am so sorry to tell you that we are unable to offer you admission to MIT.

Response: I have completed my review of the decisions letter and I am so sorry to tell you that I am unable to accept your denial of admissions.

Posted by: Someone who wasted their money on March 14, 2009 02:14 PM

I'm glad the waiting's over. I nearly went crazy during the last 20 minutes there...

I was fully prepared for my decision, I think. I just accepted it with sullen dignity. I walked into the other room, hugged both my parents. I didn't cry, I didn't stutter. I've just been denied acceptance from one of the best schools in the country, and I've never been prouder.

Thanks so much to everyone (bloggers, admissions officers, parents, teachers, guidance counselors)! This really was a great experience.
It was more fun applying to MIT than to any other college!

Oh well. There's always UF Honors College for me!

Posted by: E on March 14, 2009 02:18 PM

Ya I can tell MIT is so sorry, with the generic letter and the pseudocomforting euphemistic way of saying you're rejected. That actually is the worst way to approach denied students, because no one likes being pitied.

Good bye.

Good luck to all of you, wherever you end up.

Posted by: Katie on March 14, 2009 02:18 PM

well, can't say that i wasn't expecting it. i thought i'd be okay, but apparently i wanted MIT more than i thought. well, University of Michigan has just replaced MIT as #1 in my book, as they actually want me there and is offering me scholarships.

so to MIT, thanks for deferring me 4 months after i submitted my application, then making me wait 3 more months for a rejection. thank you for making me cry over my pie and ruining that. and congratualtions, you just lost an awesome student. my type of awesome just doesn't clash with your type of awesome.

Thank you, this wasn't the school I wanted to go for undergraduate and I would have been made to go to this school if I did get accepted. I will apply here for graduate though, when I think it'll be time for me to be here. Thanks for the experience, you've shown me how the potential of the human spirit. I'll work up to be the student you're looking for in graduate year. I'll see you then.

Posted by: Richard T. on March 14, 2009 02:19 PM

I expected this, but I still had a shimmer of hope. Oh well, I still have 7 other schools that haven't given out decisions yet.

Posted by: Peyton on March 14, 2009 02:20 PM

Ah, I'm pretty disappointed. I can honestly say I love MIT and really, really wanted to attend probably since elementary school. My grades, involvement, etc. all revolved around being admitted to MIT. It didn't happen though. Nonetheless, I don't feel like I wasted my time...if anything my interest motivated me. But no need to dwell. I'd do better closer to home, I guess. And $50000 a year doesn't sound too appealing. It's just...MIT is a great school. Not the end of the world, though. I'm going to take a day (today) to be sad...and tomorrow is a new day.

@BrittanyM

Thank you for your nice words.
I really was insane about MIT. The decision hurts me, but I don't regret it. I don't regret the time I checked part 1 of the application 200 times. I don't regret the time I was sitting down thinking what I should talk about during the interview. I don't regret the time I spent writing my essays. I don't regret sitting in this small during thanksgiving and Christmas break to revise and rewrite my essay while it became a zombies city.

ohhhhhh GOD.

I LOVE MIT, and I will always will. Even if I don't get the chance to apply for MASTERS there, I will always love it.

THANK YOU MIT FOR this experience.

Posted by: Husain Bani Hashem on March 14, 2009 02:23 PM

Best of Luck to all admitted students. In your four years at MIT, remember how lucky you were to be admitted at this mecca of learning - and work hard so you can live up to it.

To others who were "rejected" - as i said in an earlier post, tough luck. But always keep in mind that if you stay good at heart and determined of purpose - anything's possible. Getting in to MIT doesn't necessarily mean you'll be successful in life - the same way not getting into MIT can never imply you can't go all out for success.

Never let anyone define your limits.

It's one down. I'm sure you guys have other decisions pending - let's hope for a positive result from them.

Nice knowing all you guys!

To MIT I would say - great website, great admissions people, great blog, and most importantly, a great institute. Keep up your good work.

First off, congratulation to everyone as we're quickly approaching graduation with more accomplishments and experiences than many of our peers. I understand that this time is difficult for all of you (I'm going through the same thing), but just keep in mind, MIT does admissions based on the match between each applicant and MIT. I know it sounds petty, but perhaps it really is in our best interest to seek our educations elsewhere because it is in other settings that our needs will be best met. I once thought that I wanted nothing more than to go to MIT but a change of heart and a change of major have actually led me elsewhere. I'm actually thankful to be "not admitted" because had I been accepted, I would have gone to MIT doubtlessly just because of the name. Although I might now be headed to a slightly less prestigious institution, I know that it's going to be for the best because that's really where interests lie and my needs will be met.

Just out of curiosity, where is everyone looking at going now?

At precisely midnight on 3/15 (yeah, so my timezone's 12 hours ahead) I was sitting on a bench outside Times Square HK with my best friend, singing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" at the tops of our voices.
The decision seems to have sunk in by now, and that good mood hasn't disappeared yet.
Reminder: Some things are more important than MIT. Really. Recognize them.

I hoped i could pursue my new dream at MIT starting from this year and few minutes ago, i found out that i can't.. but i'm still waiting for God to make a miracle for me. Anyways, for those who got admitted "Congratulations" and for those who didn't receive the admission ticket,i would say, "cheer up!" God always has a better way for us. I will pray for you guys so don't give up this is not the end of our lives. It's actually the new beginning or opportunity that we could start and embrace greater dreams. Besides.. we already became the better ones as we prepared and tried for the MIT 2009 Admission^^.

Admission Commitee, Thanks for your work. We all know that it was really hard for you to make the decisions this year. Thanks^^.

God Bless!

@Paul McCartney: You weren't a whole lot prettier, either.
And hey, it's music! And friends! Better than MIT.

I think I was mostly rejected just because I probably couldn't afford MIT :\

@ the second anon at 2:36 -- Admissions are need-blind. Otherwise I think they would have sent my application right back to me with an "lol" on the cover before they read through the whole thing :)

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 02:44 PM

Scrolling past all the familiar names from 6 or 8 months of reading these blogs, I'm actually mildly surprised who got rejected. I guess it remains to see about the people I know in my school to come up with a feeling of the results.

It's funny, I noticed someone else talking about how they were hurt by the "impersonal" way MIT gives rejections, and I actually have to agree with that. I don't know if I would take it any better in any other form, but I know when I was deferred in December it really hurt. Now I just feel like the decisions.mit.edu portal is cursed for me.

I'm staying on the bright side of things this time though. I found out I got into Caltech a week ago, and I'm still waiting on a number of other schools. For me, MIT was the perfect combination of everything I wanted - location, academics, and overall coolness - but life is after all compromises. Perhaps I'll hack a CPW someday =P

I'd like to thank everybody in the admissions office for all their help through this long process. You all have done a wonderful job, and I don't mind a bit that I don't fit in the "select few" Thanks so much for all you've done.

@Whoever's taking the time to delete spam right now: Thank you.
And everyone else, for real, grab a friend and go sing a silly song in the middle of a mall. If you don't die of embarrassment, you will die of laughter. Either way, the MIT decision will not seem as important.

Posted by: Shruti on March 14, 2009 02:49 PM

Sorry, Colton. At least you got a really great hack in! How many other prospectives can say that?

I'm still going to read the blogs and wear the MIT hoodie that I got when I visited, because I really do love the school, lol.

I was considering applying for a transfer next year, but I don't want to spend my freshman year trying to get into another school. I'd rather put my heart and soul into my backup, then maybe reapply here for grad school.

Like, I mean, I wouldn't be able to afford to even go out there. One of my essays mentioned this, and I think they knew. It's just a hunch, though, and I really hope you're right and that they were needs-blind. Pobre anon is pobre :(

Oh well. Congratulations, once again, to all of you who got in.

This will be the last time many of us are posting at the admissions web site. The last 3 months have been very exciting as we have found out all about ourselves and that is more important than all other lessons MIT can teach in its hallowed classrooms. We met lots of great people, had great conversations and I hope, made great friends. May the friendships continue till the grad school admissions...lol....

Thank you so much MITˇ I mean, really, really.

First, your letters are humorous, and this is the main reason I found your school interesting to me.Even the decision.mit.edu page is so funny that made me smile, I just love it ;D

Second, thank you for rejecting me. Cuz my mom and my teacher made me apply to your school though I don't really like math & science. I tried so hard to persuade myself (with the reason of you being humorous) that this is the school for me, but deep in my heart I have the doubt that I will live miserably for four years when people are talking about math formulas while I am reading the Analect. I have to say that the admission officers are awesome to find this out :D

Whew, freed at last(wink)

But I guess there are different things planned for me.
However I still love u MIT, from the bottom of my heart...
Maybe, I got accepted in some other dimension. : )
Cheers to that....

Posted by: Utkarsh on March 14, 2009 03:34 PM

I would very much like to say, that MIT didn't deserve ME, like someone before did. I really would. But I can't, cause it's not true.

Let's face it. It's not about an applicant pool that is too small, it's not about admission officers who are soooo sorry to have had to reject so much qualified students. It just turns out that I AM NOT GOOD ENOUGH. What was I thinking: MIT as an international? Guess I'm not as cool as I thought.

I'm angry about the time and money I lost. Two years of studying for SATs, which no one who isn't mad in my country (like me), isn't even aware of, two years of polishing essays, running after teachers, etc. All for nothing. Man.

I feel bad with it and don't know when I'll get over it. Honestly.

Cheers to all rejected.

I wasn't really sad at all until I logged into mymit one more time for the hell of it. All I could think was "goodbye". ;(

I understand though, I can't even begin to comprehend what tens of thousands of applications look like, let alone reading every single one, let alone picking such a relatively tiny amount of them for admission. The vast majority of people who apply to any school are, by any measure, qualified to attend, it really just comes down to luck.

I enjoyed the opportunity to dream for a little while about what could be. Now that reality has come knocking, I hold no regrets. To the admissions committee at MIT, thank you for giving me a moment of your time. You might be hearing from me again in the future :).

"Thanks MIT for giving me the opportunity to apply, I really think it was awesome to try, even though it didn't work out. I'm not gonna lie, long before the admissions came out, I knew that MIT wasn't going to be the right "fit" for me, so it works out perfectly to have been rejected. :)"
YEAH- That is what I think too.
I want to thank EVERY single student and Admissions staff member who patiently posts on this site. Thank you for making the application process human and the wait bearable. You guys are angels :-)
Too bad it didn't work out for me..but I'm sure I'll be happier somewhere else. I'd braced myself for this, and I have no regrets. More likely, those who deserved the admission made it to the Class of 2013..and I'm genuinely happy for them!

First of All, Thank you MIT for a chance for me to apply. I enjoyed filling out the application, and the process. But one thing I do want to say is for future students, don't make anyone living in the United States, International Students just because they don't have their green cards. We are legal citizens, who compete for spots against kids in the United States

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 04:09 PM

8.02 is a box of fun for me. I thought if i got in i'll be spending my time on 8.02 and 18.0. I'd love to spend my whole on those area. MIT was always a thrill for me n sill it is.

I just want to say that I am really impressed with the maturity most of you guys are displaying in these comments. It's great that most of you are being entirely reasonable. Many of you guys were qualified - meaning you will go on to do great things at another institution.

Let yourself feel the disappointment, then carry on and kick butt. MIT's a great place, but it's far from the only place. Don't let your disappointment develop into bitterness that will ultimately hurt you. You guys are much better than that :D

Posted by: Piper '12 on March 14, 2009 04:10 PM

I completely agree with the Anon above. We ARE living in the States, we deserve to compete against American students.

Posted by: rejectedhaha on March 14, 2009 04:13 PM

Its sound rude, but its true that u really do not deserve MIT. MIT is a great school for its diversity.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 04:18 PM

At waiting... I don't have anything against the diversity factor, and am very upset that your comment. Firstly, living in the US for the past 10 years and being treated as a domestic person, is very harsh and troubling for anybody. Secondly, I am not bitter. If every other school can accept the fact that I am a legal resident in the states, then MIT should make a move to do the same. I am just encouraging them to make a move in the future, not complaining about my acceptance.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 04:19 PM

Ok guys, It was a good run!

Dear MIT:

Thank you so much for considering my application. It was just not meant to be and I hope that every student that has been admitted has a great experience and hopefully we can all change the world for the better.

Dear Students (Not Admitted)

LOl, we had a nice run, and dont worry! We will change the world for the better anyway, MIT is a great college and it has a LOT of great people in it, but it was not meant for us, and its better this way.

We will all change the world, we will all get over it and I promise you your life will be better after this!

@ SadRejectedFellowFromTheOtherSideOfTheOcean:

10 rejections? Don't think that way. Everyone will end up going to where they are meant to go.
MIT is my dream too, and even if it didn't work out at the end of Round 1, there's still transfer/grad school!

Which other schools did you apply to?

Posted by: European Rejectee on March 14, 2009 04:20 PM

Well..after 2 and a half hours of dreading to look.... what i always thought would but was hopuful would not happen did happen :( i didn't get in... i knew my chances were near to none... but i tried anyway and im glad i did, it was indeed the best application process out of my options. All i have left to do is just try my best and hope i get in as a transfer...or graduate school.

@anon. i guess its not. there was nothing wrong. It was jus to competitive. All 160000 applicants were finest applicants in the world.

Cool! Everyone is being so optimistic! I shall be too. Hey, we aren't going to Hell! Party! Anyone? Haha~

Best wishes to everyone who applied! The process itself was thrilled enough. Fighting with the deadline wasn't an easy task.

Well, I will come again when I want to pursue my master and doctorate degree. See you guys!

People, stop thanking MIT staff for anything. It strikes me bcz it just as though u accept that your destiny was in their hands!!! NO!! Stop disparaguing yourselves. Your destiny is in your hands. I am sure there are some more than 1600 students who deserved entering, but were rejected just because the limit is due to a lack of places available in class!! MIT just cannot accomodate more students. Secondly, it is their work, I must say it is in some way unfair what they do. Just throwing great applicants...

i sorta knew i wouldnt make it...i don't have a 'hook'...im just good academically, but so is evryone else applying...but I live in Saudi arabia, and this place doesnt give u any opportunities...NONE...no competitions, ECs, volunteering, part time work, nothing....ahh...Guess I'm not MIT material after all

This is my last post. its true and sad that from now in two hours no one will be posting comments. after 30 days they will close this blog to reduce spam. How sad is that?? nyways it was really pleasure for me to share my feelings with all of you guys. I loved MIT , I love MIT and I will love MIT till my death. My plan was to never leave MIT, if i got accepted. Now as a freshman later as grad student and may be later as a professor or anything related to MIT even as bowl cleaner. Thats how much I love her.

I hate it when sometimes an IMO medal could mean that much. I applied as an international and I guess that the *supposedly national quota* has pretty much reduced my MIT competition to a mere battle between me and other Vietnamese peers. It was painful to finally realize that my 3 national awards from Singapore, Australia, and America apparently couldn't even be compared to his single IMO. Howbouts I'm living overseas and I couldnt be in the national team for IMO? I'm sure MIT didn't know/consider that.
Adieu my forever bittersweet fantasy.

@European Rejectee
Grad school is certainly an option for you. I however wanted to go to med school after college. If the other U.S. institutions reject me, I'll end up going to med school right away with practically no further chance for MIT or some other U.S. university.

Transfer, let's be realistic 15 admits? Not rarely 0 internationals? Those are mostly people admitted to MIT as freshmen who chose to go somewhere else, but didn't like it there.

If you're asking, I (still) am applying to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Middlebury, Williams, UChichago, UPenn, Stanford, Columbia & Dartmouth.

If you wan't some private bitter talking email me at smusiol@gmail.com

Btw. Where are you from?

Do grad school students still get a brass rat?

Regardless of the above question, I plan to attend next year.

Newton didn't go to college, Einstein didn't go to a great college, but they were the fathers of physics and all genius people, and I didn't make it to MIT, but I will be the next person to win the Noble Prize in Physics

I'm disappointed about not being accepted to MIT. But I am even more disappointed now that I didn't enjoy or have fun with the application process, but instead viewed it as a burden. I feel like all of this was a waste.

@Anonymous:
The Nobel prize is awarded once per year, so I don't think you will get next years ;). I have no doubt though, that all of us rejected to MIT will end up doing something grand. After all, you must be good if you even bothered applying, and MIT being best in the rankings doesn't necessarily mean MIT being best for you.

All I can say is I loved the ride- the blogs (particularly Yan's), the comments, everything. I am happy that I will attend my state university- it is still 8th in the nation for aeronautics. The honors college has already offered me full tuition, and I have yet to hear from all the other scholarships I applied to. Most of all are the opportunities I gain by not attending MIT: I get to see all my friends going to university with me, I am closer to home, I get to continue working on my engineering project (Which made the nationwide finals! Please support by giving my project 5 stars at http://www.conradawards.org/harwell_asturias_labs ), and many other intangibles.

Agur MIT, Kaixo UT Austin.
Maybe for grad school...

I wanted to go, but oh well. In the end, it just comes down to chance and the circumstances you're given. Congrats to those brilliant students who were admitted.

Do keep up your wonderful standards so that the grad-school dream will not change.

@ Husain, Stacy, Shruti, Waiting... and a lot of comrades...

This is my second post at this blogs. The previous one was last year when I got rejected too.

For those I wrote the name, I share a particular view of the situation. Yes, it's not "the end of the world", but, for now at least, is "the end of our world". Ok, there are a lot of other places, but what to do when, by lack of money, your father stops his own undergraduation for you to study, and the only place that says "we'll fill 100% of your needs", by the second time, reject you?

I'm in a undergraduation course (Environmental Chemistry), but I found that it's not what I want. What I really want is Nuclear Science and Engineering, and I don't have this course in any university of my country (Brazil). And this second rejection it's a punch when you didn't got adMITted in any other course that is one different from the 'wrong' that you are doing right now (and that's why I didn't applied as transfer).

Well, I don't know what the hell I'm going to do now. Next year I'll not apply as transfer student because I'm not in my "right" course, but I don't know too "what to do for my education" until the next MIT application.

After all, it's THE ONLY college that have my wished course and I can afford for...

And now, it's time to hear Dragonforce and Gustav Mahler, and time to wait for the next year wishing that I'll write my single-post-of-the-year in a different forum. Best luck to all 2nd-er and (2+n)th-er time applicants as me next year. I hope to have one of as classmates in 2010.

A bear-hug,

Rafael Merlo
from Brazil

(P.S.: I have ice cream here, but I don't feel the minimum wish to eat it.)

Here I sit, sad and dejected,
Tried for Mit, but got rejected.

Got straight A's, and super scores;
Alas, somehow they wanted more.

So now I turn to lesser schools,
Hoping they will take in fools
like me -- who tried his very best
to win the prize, but failed the test.

The outcome smells much like a skunk,
But I have no intent to flunk,
And cans to go before I'm drunk,
And cans to go before I'm drunk.

Your letter to tell me "sorry" arrived today. I understand you have a limited addmission. It would be nice to know where I went wrong or what I did not have that you needed. I spent 4 years of High school geared towards MIT, as a freshman I contacted MIT to ask for advice. I have taken every AP and Honors course every year for the 4 years and maintained a GPA of 4.32, I made National Honors Society, state and national champ in my school sport and this is not good enough for you, I would like to see you post those who were accepted. I also spent 4 weeks on my application, was it even read.....What did I do wrong?

Posted by: Ryan on March 14, 2009 05:49 PM

@European Rejectee:
Thank you! If you like it, please remember to give it 5 stars (not clearly labeled, but its near the top on the right hand side, labeled "Rate our Product"). I've been working on it for almost 5 months now, and I hope to see it completed.

I applied to Caltech too, but I will go to UT Austin, for reasons listed in above post. They have a great aeronautics program, I talked to the head of the department the last time I went there. I recommend it.

Where in Europe are you from?

Posted by: Daniel on March 14, 2009 05:51 PM

well thats affirmative action I guess...

its not so much that I am not going to MIT now, its just the fact that wherever I end up I will only have to have worked half as hard my whole life as I have. I will go to the same school as the rest of the students in my school who took it easy while I was busy studying.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 05:56 PM

O well.

Posted by: O hi on March 14, 2009 05:58 PM

Ugh....

What can I say? I almost had a heart attack at work today waiting for the decisions to go online. Then I still had to work for another hour after learning that I had been rejected. Needless to say, that sucked. At least I have my senior project shadowing a NASA aerospace engineer to look forward to. Anyone else on here going to University of Michigan, possibly for aerospace engineering?

On another note, if its any consolation, most of the people on here sound more deserving of admittance to me than a certain someone whom I know got addmitted.

Posted by: David on March 14, 2009 06:00 PM

Hey everyone,

Sadly, I must join those in this forum. Rejected, dejected, just plain sad, etc.

Good job to all of you, though. You must have a lot of potential to even have considered applying to MIT. Make the best out of wherever you end up. MIT has a lot of good resources that would have certainly helped you to excel, but there are a lot of other good places out there, as well.

Work hard, study hard, keep focused on the future. Each of us can do amazing things and go to amazing places in life. This is just one more stumbling block. Don't let it trip you up forever. It's about you, not about where you go. you need to make the most out of the time you have. If nothing else, make this a goal: Prove that the people at MIT were fools to reject you. Be the best that you can without MIT's help.

The world is ours. Don't let this bring you down too much. Get back up, and be the best engineers/physicists/psychologists/actors/geneticists/computer scientists/whatever that the world has ever seen. We can do that without MIT.

We just....might need to work a little harder to get there.

Good luck, all. Now I need to make myself forget about the admissions site before it drives me mad :)

also glad to see some of you guys get to go to at least the second best engineering school in the country. MIT was the only private school that interested me and I didn't consider Cal Tech because I didn't want to go west coast.

@Anon some ways up the page:
"Ya I can tell MIT is so sorry, with the generic letter and the pseudocomforting euphemistic way of saying you're rejected. That actually is the worst way to approach denied students, because no one likes being pitied."

Are you expecting MIT to write customized sympathy letters to 13000+ students? Last time I checked most other colleges use the same format to notify applicants. At least it's better than Stanford's e-mail from last year, which went something like this:

"We are sorry that we were unable to admit you to the Stanford class of 2012. To be ecologically friendly, you will not be getting a copy of this letter in the mail, and this will be the last contact you will receive from us. Good luck in life."

Posted by: Phaedra on March 14, 2009 07:02 PM

281??!! That's my area code!

@ Anonymous 5:56 PM:
I had the same feeling too, but in the end anything is as hard as you make it. If you keep on working hard as you have done already, you will stand out from the ones who coasted, even at the same college. Getting in to a specific college ok, but succeeding at the college you went to is better. I can promise (through the internet) that your extra hard work will pay off in some way- just maybe not the way you thought it would. Life is full of surprises /*end cliche*/

I have my own company to help homeless children in Florida, started my school's recycling program, have helped keep my school's foreign language program by getting perfect scores at national competitions every year. Alas, they accept a lazy kid who sleeps all the time at school and only worked on the application during the cut-off date.

Wow.

MIT, this is your loss, because you won't have the opportunity to grow because of me. I know God has a greater plan for me that I do not see myself, and I accept this pain. I really wanted the chance to dorm with my best friend who wants to go there for her graduate degree.

Instead of deferring me, you could have just rejected me in the first place. I guess all my humanitarian works were not enough for you.

Sleeping and being lazy is.

Well, here's to the end of a long, long journey. But in all, I must say I did have fun during the whole process of applying, of reading everyone's blogs, of experiencing the campus and people, and of all the extra-curricular activities on the side. And for me, it was a strong character building experience.

It's a pity that so many of us did not make it, with 16000 applications this year. MIT is a great place, and it will always be a great place to me. I'm disappointed, and I know we're all disappointed. But I'd like to say that I feel incredibly honored to have even competed with many of you - I've read the profiles of the decisions thread on CC, and some of the rejected applicants are phenomenal. To those on CC, I'd like to thank all of you for the support and trust we've shared in the past seven months. To everyone, don't give up and good luck with all your future endeavors. I like Daniel's post earlier on - you are bound to do great things in the world, simply due the fact that you've worked so hard to apply to MIT. I hope to see you all some day.

And in response to Rafael's post,
*hugs*

I wish I could curve the time and start all over again from the very beginning. How scary that,I did not apply to any other school, accept for MIT. I was hoping to get in. But now at this point of life it feels like this is the end of the world. Feels like there is a sharp needle pinching inside of my chest...cant a miracle take place?

Posted by: curving the time on March 14, 2009 08:08 PM

While I am thrilled (and still in shock) that my son was accepted, I saw some dejected comments on the accepted students' forum from kids who were not accepted, and I want you to know that there are plenty of great schools, and you will land in one of them and have a wonderful experience.

To: curving in time, my college experience started as yours did. I had my heart set on one college and didn't apply to a backup. When I was rejected, I had to scramble to select several others and apply right away. I got into all of them! Ended up in the right place for me and it changed the course of my life. I have never been sorry.

Not being accepted to MIT is not a reflection of your value. Each and every one of you is a winner.

Posted by: MIT mom on March 14, 2009 08:42 PM

@ curving the time

Awww bless you. *pat pat*

You can always take a year out, do some useful things, and apply (or re-apply to MIT)

But just think, experiences like this make us stronger! =)

I really wasn't confident about getting into MIT but I hoped I would eventually. This was the place I loved everything about and based my plans upon. And this is the very place which rejects me, doesn't feel any better. I guess I'll try for transfer admissions. I still do love MIT and everything about it at the end of the day. It was just that it was not meant to be. Hope to see all some day in a place as great as MIT! (I know there isn't)

MIT was the only college that I have ever praised with the word "awesome." The culture, the blogs, the hacks, the cool nerdiness, the three letters juxtaposed together -- it seemed to fit me so nicely. I wouldn't have minded the sleepless nights, the multiple failures to deflate my little ego of being a student at MIT, or the fact that I would have had to probably take out $10k loans per year, even though my family is low income, just to attend. I thought it might have been destiny telling me a hint when I saw "MiT" on the reflection of the glass on a subway train as I was going home after my MIT interview. I thought it was possible; I just needed to reach my hand out...it was possible, it was just that my hand wasn't the one chosen. It just wasn't meant to be. Maybe I will apply next year for transfer. Maybe I will apply for grad at MIT in four years. I don't know. But right now, I'll just take this rejection as a chance to rediscover myself. Where I end up in the future I have no idea. Perhaps someday, such a future will let me meet MIT again. I hope so. MIT, stay cool.

I'm really glad people are taking the rejection so well. If anyone recalls from the Early Action Not Admitted blog, everyone posted their stats and asked what was wrong. It was awful and stupid. I can see that many of you will have bright futures with lots of success and happiness without MIT by the way you are accepting this. And remember, MIT didn't accept you because you were'nt good enough, it's because they thought you wouldn't be a good fit, and God just wants you to be at the right place.

Really? Nearly no Chinese?

@ Chang Yang

In my opinion, the whole 'international quota' thing is horrible.

To the tune of “Amazing Grace”:

Not good enough for M-I-T…
I feel just like a clod.
So, put an I.V. in my arm
If you are out there, God.

My friends all laugh and point at me,
My parents think I’m dim.
My sister says I reached too high,
Now things are looking grim.

If I could do it all again,
To more I would apply.
There’s wisdom in a safety school
For such a dope as I.

When I have toiled at ‘Burger World’
For many years to be,
I’ll heave a sigh, and wish I had
Got in to M-I-T!

Hey all, I just wanted to drop you a word and tell you that you are the heros of today! It is so easy to win, so hard to face failure.
I believe things happen for a reason in life. You won't appreciate your rejection now, maybe even in years, but eventually you will see that it happened for some other door to be opened. And it is not easy to say for me, as I failed many times and really thought it was the end of the world. Now I can see it just had to happen so that other things could happen. I know how hard it is in such moments, but really, one day you will look back at this and smile:) and - 'you don't always get what you want, but you get what you need' :)

more things that I am looking at the bright side for going to a public university:

More parties
More people
Not everyone is a nerd
Packed sporting events with tailgating before
More parties

An international quota is TOTALLY appropriate.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 14, 2009 10:55 PM

Well. I can't say I wasn't expecting this. Funnily enough throughout this years I kinda felt me and MIT were not a perfect match, as my natural laziness doesn't fit the MIT profile.

However, looking at complete failure for the first time in my life I'm more motivated than ever! For that I thank you folks at MIT admissions! I'm finaly feeling a huge urge to learn, and that's all I need.

Congratulations to all '13 beavers ;). I'm sure you have earned this go out (or in) and enjoy!

It's hard not to be sad, but I guess that's just the way it is.
Since this is my las post on these blogs I just wanted to thank you all guys because at least I felt like part of MIT for a few months. This time was of too much value. I know you will always be a great school. Thank you again.

Hey everyone! I'm sorry that you didn't get admitted. But you know what? You're already winners for trying and putting yourselves out there. I'm sure that since you were ambitious enough to apply, you'll have successful futures hopefully. Keep your head high and don't let go of your dreams! Who knows? Maybe you'll apply for MIT grad school or as a transfer student and get admitted. Good luck in your future endeavors! :)

Also, who here is from the UAE?

Posted by: Majda '12 on March 15, 2009 12:24 AM

Well that's college 1: Aaron 0. Now I wait...

Posted by: Aaron on March 15, 2009 12:26 AM

It was too cruel a decision. i am still unable to figure out what went on wrong? was there some mistake in the application or was it my age that i got rejected.

Posted by: Ambud on March 15, 2009 12:35 AM

Rejected. Well, I still have 18 more colleges left to accept me. I guess MIT wasn't the best fit for me. It just wasn't meant to be. Everyone, don't be too stressed out. I'm sure you're gonna get into the best colleges for you guys. Lastly, enjoy your rest of senior year! Seize the day.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 15, 2009 12:43 AM

It doesn't matter where you are or who you're with, all that matters is what you do.

Congrats to the 1600 people who are better for MIT than me. Best of luck to the rest of us.

Maybe I'll see you again in 4 years, maybe not. All I hope is that I (and everyone like me) do as much in those 4 years elsewhere as we would have at MIT.

Posted by: Jim on March 15, 2009 12:48 AM

applying to MIT was in itself a very unique experience, but MIT, be sure of one thing that ill be applying for MS again!!

Posted by: prashanth on March 15, 2009 12:49 AM

Hi thank every one for showing sympathy on me. Dear MIT, just to let you know that, I never had a good chance in my life for better education. We were always poor. We could not even afford paying our all bill and other stuff, going to MIT was just a dream but nothing for me. I had to work 24/7 just to support my family. Maybe thats why I could not put that much of extracuricullar activities on my resume. But it says, sometimes dreams come true. I wanted to take that chance hoping it will come true. Alas! all my dreams just run away.

I still have my hope. My plan is to go any college right now and master on all science and math class and then apply to MIT again as a transfer student. Dear MIT, I belong to you, you will have take me this time no matter what. I know it sounds little fool. But what can I do? I just love you that much. No one can take your place from my heart. You were in the depth of my heart, you are still and you will remain.

Wish me best luck my SWEETHEART.

Posted by: Curving time. on March 15, 2009 12:55 AM

@ Marwan: Don't be harsh on yourself and don't let poeple make the best of you! Atleast you had the guts to apply! And as for the person who laughed at you for you wanting to apply to MIT, I'm sorry to say that I think that person needs to get a life! Let me see them try and apply and go through the stress that you went through! Do you know that I went through the exact same experience you went through before I got here? I also got that comment from a very dear friend who said "it's a dream for you to get in..exactly a dream!" I was really hurt by that, but you know what? I'm here now! I'm sure you'll make the best of your college education and reach some amazing place in the future! Somethings just happen and maybe for the better. You never know what life has in for you. :)

I am sad. PLEASE accept me, Princeton!

Posted by: JoeM on March 15, 2009 12:59 AM

Majda is very bad at false sincerity. Apparently the only reason he posted whatever he posted is to see who else in UAE failed to secure the "golden ticket". Just so he can feel even better than he does now. His "good luck in your future endeavors, LOSERS!" preamble is just a facade.

Learn this: If Majda really cared about the not-admitted folk, he would not have asked the "UAE question", he was just softening us up so we can give him the information he seeks.

Also learn this: If MIT really believed we were "simply fantastic", it would have given more spaces up for grabs. MIT did not, which makes me conclude, a) MIT is perfectly happy admitting only 1600 spaces and does not want to make more spaces available because it is a waste of time and money b) MIT is perfectly sure you are not spectacular in any way as to further its goals.

Anyone who is consoling you and saying "it's OK, there are places elsewhere," is just eliminating you from the competition. MIT may be full of outstanding students and staff, but even they are subject to universal logic. Period.

Feel free to debate or refute my argument. There might be holes somewhere.

Get rid of affirmative action. It is discriminatory and wrong. I had everything (#1 in class, sports, music, a LIFE), but I just happened to be white middle class. Your loss. Just because I am white does not mean I have nothing to offer to the campus. You and Stanford are just the same that way, except you outrightly admit that you discriminate against caucasians. Good you you. I'll just go to Berkeley then, and NOT be in debt after four years. Too bad. Peace.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 15, 2009 01:23 AM

@ championofnearlyperfect logic: my intention is not to feel better about myself in any way. Maybe it wasn't clear to you. I'm already a freshman here (class of 2012) and the only reason I asked if there were students from the UAE is because I am from the UAE and I was wondering how many people from there applied to MIT. I really don't see your logic, but still good luck to you in what may come your way!

@gandu
Grades aren't a measure of intelligence, so whatever you think about getting distinctions or # of A's all fails when you come into a world where the brtish (no offense to britishers) standard rote learning system falls through the ditch.

The important thing here is not to flame the admissions office or admitted students. It's not their fault. After all screening, it all came down to chance and , let's face it, someone had to go. They simply don't have enough room. It doesn't reflect on your intelligence. HEck, you might be smarter than a person who was admitted, but somebody thought that you wouldn't fit there. You can always apply for transfer. You might even become a professor there like Umar saif(he got rejected). You have the right to be upset though but not to funnel your anger on the internet. I've been wanting to go to MIT sincce I was a kid, I worked real hard to get in, but God didn't want me there. Maybe something bad would've happen to me there or maybe something better will happen to me elsewhere. And don't let this think your chances for other colleges are ruined because they're mutually exclusive events and therefore conditional probability doesn't apply. Although, getting rejeccted here does actually improve your chances for the rest. (The ppl who got accepted here won't go to the other places, frees up space). So keep your eyes on your second best prize and then next year if you feel up to it, apply for a transfer.

MIT = Most Inopportune Turnout. For all you junkies that did not obtain the acceptance letter, just remember that emotion is something not cared about (ended in a preposition!). After all, according to MIT, we simply evolved from nothing and we are now just an arrangment of atoms. I hate all those arrangements of atoms in the admissions office! You guys made a bad decision...I'm going to turn back into my monkey state and eat your bananas.

Posted by: Jeffrey Wilkins on March 15, 2009 02:13 PM

Your loss. I just beat two people who DID get into MIT in the Chemistry Lab event at my Regional Science Olmypiad Meet.

Posted by: Jason on March 15, 2009 02:16 PM

Getting into college, especially top schools is a lottery, not a reflection on who you are (for both that got in and didn't). Universities are a business, pretty good business, but then again your resume is a signaling mechanism.
For those who aren't coming to MIT here's a secret: you go anywhere else, it'll take a little bit more effort but you can be the best, in fact forcing yourself to push through the crowd at bigger schools will help you out in the real world!
Honestly people make a community not the other way around.

"[MIT,] don't make anyone living in the United States, International Students just because they don't have their green cards. We are legal citizens, who compete for spots against kids in the United States"

What? Sorry but, you are not a legal "citizen", youre not even a legal resident. And any way, MIT reserving 10-12% of its class for internationals is too high anyway particularly since most require substantial financial aid. MIT although "private" is still a US taxpayor supported institution and it should be reserving this aid for US citizens especially in tough economic times.

Hey guys,

I know exactly how all of you feel. I was in the same spot a year ago. I applied to MIT early action and was deferred and then eventually denied. And, as you all well know, it hurt. I cried for a long time. I spent hours wondering what was wrong with me and why I didn't get in. MIT was my #1, my dream school, etc etc.

A year later, and I am SO glad that I didn't end up going to MIT. I'm at another school now (which, incidentally, wasn't even anywhere in my top choices), and I absolutely LOVE it. I wouldn't trade the experiences I've had and the friends I've gained for anything.

The point of this long message is to tell all of you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You will move on from this. You will go somewhere else that is equally awesome (if not more). And you will love it there. I PROMISE you.

So please, hang in there. And wherever you go, keep an open mind. Getting rejected from MIT is not the end of the world. Someday, you might even be glad you didn't go to MIT, like I am. =)

Posted by: Archon on March 15, 2009 06:05 PM

here comes something deep:

2 months ago I thought the world would crumble or something but I understood:
It's all about the match, the feel, the whatever.

All I know is that they passed out at least two awesome, amazing applicants from Portugal (ok... maybe just one because I'm not that egocentric) and surely a gigantic amount of others from other countries and USA.

Cheer up people, a place is not going to make you instantly great or instantly bad, it's all about your attitude. And great, now I'm sounding so cliché, it hurts...

Oh well, it was a nice trip and I (we) will surely find a nice cozy place somewhere else.

Peace out! I feel like a wise old monk.
Oh, I just grew a white beard!

Posted by: han on March 15, 2009 06:49 PM

I got rejected. And then I laughed and had a Bento Box.

Put the Kleenex tissues away and go enjoy life =]
There's a school somewhere for you, it just isn't MIT, but that's life!

Thanks for the consideration! =]

Posted by: Mew on March 15, 2009 07:11 PM

Denied but it's cool.

@Archon
That's exactly where I am right now, but I got admitted to RPI the same time I got denied from MIT. Then I checked out their website and met a bunch of awesome people who I would have never met had it not been for my rejection to MIT.

In no way should this decision hinder your lives. You weren't lucky this time, but your life is how you turn this experience into something else.

Good Luck.

Yeah, guys, sorry to hear that you guys didn't get accepted. Got 'not accepted' myself last year. It's a massive blow, especially when you put all those months of effort trying to get your application perfect, and you're just flat out rejected, not even deferred.

But yeah, I turned out fine. Things changed completely. Went to work on the project I submitted for the invention essay, got it copyrighted, maybe I'll try to patent some segments of code in 2 years. I did get accepted to the uni I deferred when applying for MIT. They're good to me, aside from making me feel treated as a 'customer' rather than a student sometimes.

But seriously, guys, there are universities that teach just as well as in MIT - only difference is that the faculty and fellow students are a slightly lower standard. You'll still learn the same thing, feel a similar IHTFP, and stay all day in your dorm cramming just as hard.

And if they didn't accept you, chances are, there's a reason. Not that there's anything wrong, maybe they feel that it won't suit you, as in you won't fit in with the others as well. But I'm a firm believer in destiny, and hey, I'm sure you guys will find a suitable place.. maybe even go to the same grad school together.

Well, not to spam or anything, but yeah, facebook group of last year's 'not accepted':

@RPI Class of 13

oh my gosh, wait list D: /hoping for a "yes"
I love how I almost couldn't take my own advice when I logged into my RPI info :P but this is the MIT site so, not the right place,

But yeah, I believe life ends up taking a better turn if you don't always go down the path you dream up the first time. Expecting the unexpected ftw.

I will be applying transfer and grad every year for the next 4 years. I am so determined to go to MIT. I still love it! Thanks for the chance. Be seeing you soon!

To all those who were denied at MIT:

God has greater plans for you. The fact that you applied to MIT indicates that you are exceedingly smart. You will do well whereever you are. Good luck .

MIT, definitely a big error.
We'll see who will lose out in the future.

CalTech is the best!

Posted by: Johnny Unitas on March 15, 2009 09:45 PM

Although I was clearly disappointed when I saw the news, for some reason I was really expecting it since I felt it inside of me already. I knew God didn't want me to be here for some reason and have to thank Him for giving me the strength to handle the decision well. But I still got 4 more to go (Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, and Stanford) which I know my God will grant me the acceptance letter of one of this university. I really wish those who got admitted the best of luck.

One door closes and another door opens. This is an occasion, for you and for me, to become even better than who you were yesterday. Personally, I will revise my heading to include another excellent institution. Perhaps even in a little while I will earn a renewed opportunity to attend MIT.

Best wishes for those of you who were admitted, and my condolences for those who were not. I suggest that you imagine how lucky another school will be to have you as their student. Keep in mind that most of the opportunities available at MIT are not exclusive to MIT. Imagine how large of an impact for the better you will make, regardless of where you go to college.

@huzaifa:
r u from LGS JT (LHR, Pakistan)?

WAT????? JUST 120 students? dey shud hav placed that on dose blogs and EVERYWHERE :x. I wud nt hav bothered applying wid my credentials :p

I dont think scores (particularly 1400) matter dis much. I have a 2220 (1500 on old scale) and I also faced the line

"We regret to inform you..."

just to test how jilted a human can feel, i also read the 'admitted students' blog. a lady wid a 680 in math level II got in (but then international students are different pool)

Am I now a number?

What a difference it is to be one of 13,000 instead of one of 1,600... Everything is so different now - the path of life has taken a sudden and sharp turn. Tomorrow feels less romantic, less like flying and more like falling. It seems that my dream has not only been deferred (in the literal and metaphorical sense) but also completely and wholly disassociated.

What am I now? Is this adulthood, that cruel state of being in which one discards their optimism and dons "realism"?

I'm not sure I understand all of this - it has been my firm belief that dreams are something tangible, that those who work hard and refuse to fail really do achieve - but now I am rejected by the epitome of my dream?

I could cope with Caltech's lovely letter of rejection, but this feels like being hit when I'm down.

I am not an a transcript. I am not an SAT score. I am not an AP test score. I am not a bunch of extra curricular activities.

I am a human being - I am a selfless, compassionate person. I did not apply to MIT so I could make a 7-figure salary someday, I did not apply to impress others, I did not apply to gain fame. I wanted to go to MIT so I could learn how to help people on a grand scale. I want help people live better lives. I want to save lives, not subjugate them. I would cure cancer and not charge a penny for it.

I thought MIT felt the same way. And maybe they do, but I'm just not selfless or intelligent or ambitious to make the world better anyways, or at least less so than those 1600 who can sleep with a smile on their face.

Rejection is hardest when it's from something you love, and I love MIT so much. I want to believe what you guys are saying, that it's just limited space and not a reflection on me... But have you ever had someone break with up you? Because when someone says "It's me, not you", you know what that really means? It means they could do better.

In my life, never once have I given up. Do I just take this with flair then? Do I hold my head up high?

It is much easier said than done. I can't get past this feeling that somehow everything my parents have told me was wrong. When they said "you can do anything if you work hard enough" or "the sky is the limit Robert", I believed it to the very core of my being.

Now it feels like that very ideal is what has been rejected.

So what do I do? Just move on? Just forget about it?

I know that's what I have to do, but it feels like the hardest thing in the world to me right now.

I am my dreams and my ideals, and I refuse to let them die, because when those die, I die. If life is going to make me fight for my dreams, then I will fight. I will not give in now - my pride is undying. Thought tomorrow will be gloomy, I'm not the type to stop sailing when it gets a little stormy.

To those who felt as I did, do not give up. To those accepted, I humbly congratulate you. And to the admissions office, I do not judge you, and I hold no resentment towards you.

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of may, and summer's lease hath all too short a date...

Now I know what Shakespeare meant.

Best of luck,

Robert.

@Robert

Well, Robert what ur parents said is absolutely true and it will be an unmistakable truth for years to come and has been the truth which history has already proved.

So,don't change ur soul and being !

and one more thing, everyone of us came down to earth or it would be better to say God sent us down here so that each one of us could do what we are meant to do.

Each one of us has a duty to be fulfilled and God only takes the responsibility of preparing us for that great task ! If ur life took such a sharp turn, then it means that u have something greater, greater than MIT in store for you.

When u reach that pinnacle of success, success in true sense, then u will surely feel rejection from MIT did me more good than harm !

I know how u feel right now bcoz I too longed to get into MIT, but then destiny is a strange thing !

Never stop doing hard work and believe me for sure ur hardwork will pay u one day and bestow u with all that u wanted and even all that u never thought u will get

bye, if u wanna more of this, then well here is my email id spaciothunder@gmail.com It would be a pleasure to help others

@mohit dhagat

Yes mohit, what u said is absolutely true. before rejection from MIT, I wanted to do aerospace and biomedical double major, but alas something else happened. Even I know getting AE thru IIT is like I can't even imagine !

Here I suggest two things which we can possibly do

1. repeat for IIT next year too and work in such a way that there will be no alternative remaining but we will sure shot get IIT and that too AE !

2. Do mechanical engineering in a ood engineering college and then MS or graduation in AE

I will be able to tell u more if u specify what will u be doing with ur AE major, like u take AE to get into Air force or to work for some company etc etc ,

Mail me at spaciothunder@gmail.com

I don't want to use this forum to discuss our problems ! mainly after we got rejection.

Bye

@Robert,
I felt the same way like you. I did not apply to MIT so t I could make a big bucks, I did not apply to MIT to tell people "hey, I go to MIT," I did not apply there so I could be known as a smart person in the society. I applied there because MIT is in the depth of my heart. I just can not stop loving her. No one can take her place away from my heart. I applied there to change the world and give it a peaceful shape. I applied there to invent some cars, that will never cause an accident. Even if it does the impact will be smaller than an atom. I applied there to help people, who do not have the basic human needs.

Good luck Bye

@ Robert

I understand the way you feel. It came as a shock even for me.I couldnt believe MIT had rejected me.Yes as an international my chances were slim. But you don't expect them to reject someone who topped his graduating class; who earned 800 in physics,800 in maths L2,and a 780 in L1; a 114/120 in Toefl;and who had already represented a national space organisaton in an international event. But life's like that. I WAS rejected.

Think not that the relation between a school and a student is one way.A school helps a student in understanding this world but it is the student which gives an institute it's identity.

So if an institute rejects a student the loss is not one way.If I lose an oppurtunity to interact with some great minds, the institute loses someone who has the potential of becoming a great mind.

wow,
its 1:42am EST

I'm in my room, in The bronx, ny
the lights are off
everyone is asleep...
I have come to terms with myself.
I just cried for the first time in years.
I have finally accepted it.
My fate moves on, truly God has something else in store for me.

I'm just glad i cried and its all out
it took much realization in my rejection to open up my eyes.

Thanks for everything,
from this i have learned a lot.
I have met great people.
I have experienced what many of my peers have not.

Hopefully this blog is kept up in the database for years to come, because i shall return..take not..and search for this very post which I have written and look back to it and laugh at myself.

I just feel good right now...

I bid you adieu, now i'm off to bed.

good luck to us all

I'm literally 5% disappointed. Things like this happen for a reason, and I guarantee that many of us that are rejected will get into great colleges. Bottom line, MIT just isn't for us... not now at least. It was an interesting pi day for me because although I got rejected from MIT, I got admitted to UCSD. =D

Posted by: Emmanuel on March 16, 2009 02:05 AM

@ pat

You know Evariste Galois was twice denied admission by the Ecole Polytechnique and he ended up laying the foundation for the theory of groups and solved the quintic problem. Einstein was rejected. Tagore was rejected. Fourier was rejected.Faraday learnt as a book binder.Muhammad had not even went to school.By being rejected I have joined the class of such people.

Hey there,

I too was not admitted to MIT. I am a young person from Mauritius and held the dream of studying Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT for the past four years. There is not one single night during these past four years when I did not go to bed thinking about MIT. So right now, I am extremely dissapointed, but not discouraged.

One of the greatest persons on earth, Abraham Lincoln, once said: "I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards." That's the point I wanted to raise to all of you. As disappointed as we are,we really should free ourselves from bitterness. I still love MIT as much as I did four years ago, and I will love the place forever. Our road is not straight, short and smooth, it is curved, long, and rocky. However, should we have the patience to walk long, the determination to bend around the curves, and the endurance to get up even if our feet hurt with rocks, THEN SURELY OUR ROAD WILL LEAD US TO THE SAME DESTINATION AS THE STRAIGHT ONE.

To finish, I want to thank the entire team at MIT for having taken good care of us all as applicants. You are such a wonderful institution and I love you for that.

Cheers,
Amit.

hey guys,
it sucks but what the heck, if u were meant for greater things u will surely get them. MIT is now down n from the look of things i predict a domino effect for my other unis which r in the same league such as harvard, yale, cornell, stanford, upenn, chicago, princeton n i feel like dying but when i sit back n reflect, i believe everything happens for a reason. i wanted to do math cause it was a passion that matched my talent n i believed that it held the key to opening the great doors of the unknowns but who knows......mayb the tym is nt ryt, maybe i was not meant to do it in these unis cause im an international student from africa, mayb God wanted me to stay back in africa and help those that need me, mayb il do much good here than at these universities.......mayb, mayb, mayb.........al i know is that the lord guides me in everything i do n i believe i have a great road ahead of me, things do happen for a reason n in life u cant always get what u want but that does not mean that u wont achieve it regardless of where u do it from. For my self satisfaction i will try applying next year just to fill my ego but if i get rejected i will just have to take the punch i nlife n move on, n i suggest we all do the same. lyf is made up of much more, lets go out there n get it cause we can,YES WE CAN!!!!!!

Posted by: nyangus18 on March 16, 2009 02:55 AM

so to all of you, that like me did not get accepted and got a perfect record and disposition, i would like to start by saying that 1) i know 5 MIT admitted students of this year and they all knew someone at MIT at the administrative level. chance?

maybe, but not very likely.

in the other hand, i will recomend getting into actual research institutions such as Max Plank or any university in Germany, nothing better than the mother land of science and genetic engineering, even if you go to other colleges they offer study abroad, and trust me this ones are places where you can actually discover and get credit for it.

best of luck and seriously keep this in mid, i know it hurts but got to luck at brighter options

thanks for your responsd, i guess you are right.
anyway i dont regret applying to MIT cause it was a good experience, but i regret making my whole life revolving around it!

you know its better to lose now than later, this experience will help me to have a good control on my life.
hope you you enjoy MIT to the limit, you should be proud to be a student over there.

@ Chen Li I totally agree
MIT admitted only 2 ppl from Pakistan..they rejected students with world tops perfect SAT scores 13 A's etc..Y CANT THEY INCREASE THEIR CLASS SIZE?!
and they should at least be a bit more personal in giving the decisions..oh well i guess that is what makes MIT "MIT"
i probably didnt deserve it..but im sure lots of you out there did..
for me the MIT road ends here..its either NUS or McGill if that is i get rejected from the other US unis..i hope not!!! =( UPENNNN crosses fingers*

Hey, guys, consider it an important lesson in science. You tried hard. You worked unbelievably hard, for months, writing the perfect essay, thinking of how to make the perfect application, only to face failure.

It happens in science. Take any kind of engineering for example. It began from nothing, but hundreds of brave souls trekked on, despite the fact that there was very little chance of succeeding. Thanks to them, we are where we are now - in a world of airplanes, electronics, plastics, etc.

Bravery changes the world. And you guys have been taught this important lesson first-hand, losing only a few hundred $$ and a few months. Those who did get accepted will be taught the same lesson one day, but it may cost them thousands and years of research, only to realize that their research was a dead end.

Being the great world-moving inventors that all of you are.. remember your rejection letter the next time your research reaches a dead end, and how you've moved on.

Posted by: Husain Bani Hashem on March 16, 2009 06:47 AM

I didn't expect to get in, but I didn't expect rejection to sting so bad either.

Perhaps worse than being rejected is letting go of all that I've become attached to in the past 3-4 years. The admissions site definitely upped the "hype" that MIT has and makes it really easy to get unhealthily attached to. That is my only regret.

I have no bitter feelings towards MIT whatsoever and still think its an awesome place regardless of what my friends, family, and teachers are now telling me. I'll probably still quietly follow the blogs and keep in touch with others that I've met on this wild journey.

So long and thanks for all the fish!

Posted by: Noelle on March 16, 2009 07:33 AM

Fortunately, I didn't tell almost anyone that I was applying (apart from my parents and recommenders). I told my parents of the rejection, and they said nothing happened. They looked as if they didn't care (they don't expect of me that much - they don't understand my ambitions, even though they suppert me) - but what was worse, I didn't care if they cared. Yesterday, when exactly 24 hours from decisions passed, I didn't feel any better.

Today, there's progress with my state of mind. I managed to defer my sadness for about three weeks, when the rest of my decisions is going to arrive. Now studying for National Chemistry Olimpiad Final (direct IChO preliminary), but it's soooo much harder without having the Great Dome and those cool latin letters on my mind.

I'm just afraid of 10 more rejections and staying where I am (literally and figuratively).

Two people from St. Patrick's Karachi and one from Head Start Islamabad. Interestingly, the two from Pat's had lower credentials than everyone who applied from KGS, but no one from KGS got in (not surprising... traditionally Grammarians go to Yale and Pat's people to MIT).

Maybe knowing something about some of the students who were admitted last year will put things in perspective. Check this out:

It's not about scores, grades, and numbers, it's about the person.

@han

I must admit I had a patriotic derived adrenaline rush seeing a portuguese student posting a message.

I took the SATs with another student who was also applying to the MIT (I sincerely hope he got the "admitted" decision, as he definitely deserved)

It's nice to see we're growing out there, applying to MIT-level Universities ;)

According to this blog (http://www.usnews.com/blogs/paper-trail/2009/3/16/mit-accepts-10-percent-of-applicants.html?s_cid=rss:paper-trail:mit-accepts-10-percent-of-applicants) which states that 48 % of those admitted are female, and about 25% of those are underrepresented minorities. In other words, anyone that is neither female nor underrepresented had to compete for ~27% of the slots. This does not seem to be fair, and why couldn't every applicant be treated equally? My question is: was mit admissions playing the reverse discrimination card???

Posted by: notadmittedtomit on March 16, 2009 09:43 PM

My list of universities are strange. Actually, I didn't choose any of them except MIT, my scholarship did.

I applied to UPenn, Texas Austin, Carnegie Mellon, Penn State, and Ohio State.

I'm currently in Penn State. I'm waiting for the decision of the other schools. Anyway, I think I want to stay in Penn State. After all, I got used to the city and the weather and the university.

We might have been rejected for a reason: Admitted were somewhere better than us!

Posted by: Faiz on March 17, 2009 08:51 AM

I learn two things:
1. Always follow the majority no matter how wrong you think they are, unless you have a concrete plan.

2. Bend the rules (sometimes it's really really necessary). No, don't break any laws, but life isn't perfect enough to be totally honest. You need to be street=smart to survive.

I was innocent enough to do exactly the opposite, and I guess I'll have to pay by being rejected by colleges. Sign, but I learn this important lesson for my adult life. So my rejection really wakes me up.

btw, MIT admissions people are the best of all big name schools. They really consider the context.

@robert:

Marie Curie cured cancer (in a way). she did not charge a penny for her discovery and she did not do it in the echelons of MIT but in a battered shed.

Sony's founders did not start their company to be billionaires. al they wanted was to make a tape recoredr so that they can listen to music all the time. If u r a seriously sincere passionate peron , I dont think few rejections can rob u of your dreams. as in The lord Of the rings Sam said: By rights we should not even be here. but we are. Its like in the great stories Mr. Frodo: The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you don’t wanna know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad has happened? But in the end, its only a passing. The shadow even darkness must pass. A new day will come. When the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with u. that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. but I think Mr. Frodo I do understand. I know now. Folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something

Screw this school, I'm going to Princeton. Why go to a place full of miserable Asians when I can attend the third-happiest school in America, a school consistently ranked above MIT?

Oh, and I got a 1600 on the SAT, but didn't feel like wasting the $9.50 to sent it to MIT.

Teehee...Wipe the tears from your face and move on...oh an why not scan your 1600 and post it for us.

Greatest ironies of being rejected for me: Two other people at my school were accepted.

The first is always asking me questions about calc.

The second stole my pen today and proceeded to bite/chew on it.

I just don't understand it :]

Has anyone read Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson? The protagonist, Kate, is obsessed with getting into MIT. She applies and gets rejected. I read it a couple of years ago. It's like foreshadowing my life right now. It's a pretty good book. I can feel better in that I at least got applied and got accepted to other colleges unlike Kate.

Damn I should have applied to CalTech. It's closer to me too.

If anyone who stumbles on this needs a web designer, I'm all yours. I'm going to need to do -something- about my sticky situation right now....

Also, if anyone has any advice (on living alone, for example; getting a job, looking for a place to live~), please email me. =/

I hope all of you have a good future.

Message for Rejected Applicants:

The admission process is far from equal. Some applicants not as qualified are admitted, whereas overqualified applicants are rejected. In my opinion, I would pick a university in California because of the hot women and warm weather. Reputation only goes so far. In the end, you create your academic future whether it is at MIT or UCLA.
