"MVEMJSUNP"
If you're old like me, you'll remember a classic episode of Saved by the Bell where Zach Morris joined the quiz bowl team but then the token nerd, Screech, got sick and Zach had to help carry the team. One of his mnemonics for learning the order of the planets was "MVEMJSUNP" pronounced 'me-vehn-se-nup'

But given that science likes to redefine itself every so often, it may actually be time for a new mnemonic, sorry Screech.

So here's a contest:
Assuming that the new order of the planets is:
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Ceres
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
Charon
2003 UB313
Propose a new mnemonic. I'll select a top five on Sunday, and then voting can occur through Friday the 25th of August. Winner will get something cool, promise.
Ready, set, go!

I love that Saved By The Bell is the most easily associated reference.
Yay for the late 80s and early 90s!

Wow. I can't believe I spent almost an hour and a half on that!
This is, of course, referring to the famous hack where students put a campus police car on the great dome. Click my name below for more info on that incident!
Anyway, good luck everyone, I enjoyed reading yours! :)

was very good indeed.
I shall not forget the name of 2003 UB313 ever again :) .. .. Until they change the name to Xena or Lila, which I expect they will do in the next few months.

We're back down to eight planets now! Check out the article on Wired: "Pluto Stripped of Planet Status". (click my name link) Ceres and 2003 UB313 are also going to be classified as "dwarf planets" now. Charon hasn't been given any special classification. Looks like the old mnemonic minus Pluto will still work!
Posted by: Arkajit on August 24, 2006 12:09 PM
it seems like there are two plans going on. One is going to include the Pluto and three others; the other one is to exclude the Pluto. In the second case, there are going to be only eight planets in the SS.
Interesting, really. I never thought they are going to change the rules. Millions of books have to be changed!:)
