"Early Action Decisions"
We have just sent out this email to early action applicants:
Subject: MIT Admissions Decisions Online Monday
Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008We are pleased to announce that MIT Early Action admissions decisions will be made available online on Monday, December 15 at 9:00PM EST.
Q. What is the process for receiving my admissions decision?
A. When decisions are released Monday at 9:00PM EST, simply visit https://decisions.mit.edu and log in using the same username and password that you use to log into your MyMIT account. There are no interim screens, so you should be sure you are ready to receive your decision online before logging in to decisions.mit.edu.
Admissions decisions will be available exclusively online.
To ensure that you will receive a decision online, please visit https://decisions.mit.edu and enter your username and password. Decisions.mit.edu will be available this week for applicants to confirm their login ability and decision eligibility.
Q. What if I've forgotten my MyMIT password?
A. You may use our automated system to reset it. Simply visit https://my.mit.edu and click on the lost password link in the orange log-in box on the left. If you're having trouble using our automated username/password recovery process, or if you've forgotten your username, please email mymitpassword@mit.edu with your full name and mailing address. We'll use this information to locate you in our system and reset your password within a few days.
Q. What if I don't have a MyMIT account?
A. This year, we will only be announcing decisions online, so if you haven't created a MyMIT account, make sure to create one so you can find out your admissions decision. If you do not currently have a MyMIT account and you wish to receive your decision online, you will need to register for one using your MIT ID. If you register without your MIT ID, your username and password may not work on decisions.mit.edu.
Best wishes!
-- MIT Admissions
To reiterate: don't wait for decisions to arrive via email or snail mail, as we do not plan to send out admissions decisions in this way this year. However, following the release of admissions decisions, we will be mailing necessary materials to admitted students, cylindrically.
Also, be sure to go the the Decisions site to ensure that you know your username and password.
I wish you all the best.

Best of Luck everyone!!!
I know that 5,000 people applied Early so the rates will be low as usual, but I hope most of you get in! And three months later, I hope I get in too :)

@Matt A.
I'm pretty sure they don't shred your app and send it to you. Wait, let's rephrase that, they do not shred your app and send it to you.

I was about to exclaim "Aw, no tubes!"
...until I saw that last line :)

Thanks so much Matt! I'm nervous! Can't wait until Monday night. I'm a little upset that refresh (F5) doesn't work. Very clever!

TUBES! YES!!!
Posted by: Randy on December 10, 2008 08:07 PM
It's nervewracking to think that there's a chance may be accepted to MIT in just five days. I'm excited, even though the prospect of being deferred is statistically high.
Also, I haven't heard of the tubes before... maybe I'm just not good enough of an MIT nerd... yet. :D

Tubes!!! Oh, thank you so much Matt M!! I was, honestly, quite concerned about losing out on an MIT tradition. Thanks again for the reassurance. :)

It has been a lot of fun! The entire process, the application, the waiting, the stress, the laughing...regardless of the decision, I would do it all over again in a femtosecond.
Don't forget to open a bag of Rofls!
Posted by: Alim on December 10, 2008 08:52 PM
I read that part with ever widening eyes and sadness at the thought of no tubes (provided I got in) but then I saw that they were coming and I was happy again.
*takes deep breaths*
*hides all time-telling devices except to set them to ring at 9 on monday*
Posted by: Anonymous on December 10, 2008 09:19 PM
@Sam ('13?)
The tube is what admissions decisions came in for several years. Apparently now they'll just contain everything but the letter, but I talk more about it here:
Posted by: Snively on December 10, 2008 09:21 PM
You know -- the days before decisions are all so surreal. Things are out of your hands, you've done all that you could, and the outcome is uncertain.
You're certain you studied for all the right tests and did all the things that you wanted to do. You jumped higher than your own head, and maybe admissions will recognize that. Or maybe they won't.
The race to get into college encourages everyone "to get As, to get good SAT scores, to join clubs". Is it stressful and artificial? Hell yes -- Marilee Jones certainly thought so. Unfortunately the message is malinterpreted as numbers, letters, and club names on your application -- that's not what it's about. It's about growing up. Every day we reach for the "green dock light" that's always out of our reach. And every day we get a little bit taller.
I hope Monday's lonely letters on decisions.mit.edu aren't as important to you as the process you've taken to get there. You've been striving for nearly two decades of your life to discover yourself, your interests, and to develop your passions. Accepted, deferred, and rejected are only 8 byte words. You are not an 8 byte person.
Congratulations to all of you on Monday!
Posted by: Timur on December 10, 2008 09:23 PM
Bah...I got the e-mail and all I saw was "We are pleased to announce that MIT..." and freaked out :(
But it's okay...in retrospect, it was an amusing thirty seconds in which I scrambled to my gmail.
Posted by: ilyanep ('13?) on December 10, 2008 09:30 PM
Got my email, but I have a question about an email that I, rather than MIT, sent, in regards to a letter sent by MIT, rather than myself.
Two weeks ago, I received a letter asking about my Native American heritage (although admittedly there isn't much; in "normal terms I'm 12.5% Cherokee). Two days ago, realizing that the letter response probably wouldn't make it in time, I sent an email off to MIT with what the letter would have contained; I meant to send it sooner, but I have been extremely busy, and Yahoo ate my letter several times. I then checked this site the net day (yesterday) and realized that the admissions results were already decided. I'm curious, will not having gotten this form in negatively affect me? I mean, to have gotten it in in time I would have had to sent it off the day after I received it in order for it to not have been late, assuming it wasn't delayed in the mail, which seems strange. Did I get the letter late, or were they not really expecting it to arrive on time?
Anyway, good luck to everyone... Well, that's the nice thing to say, although since only a limited amount of people can get in, wishing you good luck is also wishing bad luck upon myself, and wow I am overthinking this. Good luck, don't die from wait-induced stress, hope to see you at MIT, as that means that both I and you have gotten in, whoever you are.
Posted by: Dane on December 10, 2008 09:30 PM
@Timur -- Nice writing, I agree. Maybe you'll get a blog if you get in haha.
However, was the F. Scott Fitzgerald reference really necessary?
I wish people would stop caring so much about decisions. You've (hopefully) honestly represented yourself; that's all that you've got to worry about, let admissions officers from schools everywhere take care of the rest.
That being said, best of luck to everybody.
Posted by: Cam on December 10, 2008 09:35 PM
Haha, Timur, I hope you do get in and get a blog. I'll be happy for you :) Thanks for that.
I basically spilled my possibly incoherent, quite likely melodramatic soul onto my app, so we'll see what happens.

G'luck to all of you as well!

Can I just say,
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"
Just had to let that out.
Posted by: Matt M on December 11, 2008 12:10 AM
@Dane: I got the same letter, but I got the impression that it was only meant to supplement your application. I doubt it would negatively affect you in any way. All the same, I was nervous too that mine didn't get in on time. I only received the letter last Tuesday when I got back from Thanksgiving break, so I sent the letter and faxed a copy the next day.
Anyway, best wishes fellow nervous EA applicants!!

Hi Matt,
To beat the anxiety of the big day, my daughter prepared a comedy skit that has turned out to be awesome! It's about a security guard in the american prison who has the habit of sneaking into the interrogation room. I never knew mathematical minds have other shades too. It's a great quality, when you can make others laugh in such trying times. May be I will try this when I get fired from my job.
Regards,
Frittos.

hahaha..wowww good luck everyone!!! and those of you lucky ones who get accepted..please post your essays on a student blog or pleaseeeeee pleaseeeeee email me copies!!! email add: sehreen_74@hotmail.com
im extremelyyyy nervous about my essays so plz help me! i wont copy them of course..just need to read them to calm my nerves =)
Posted by: Sehreen on December 11, 2008 02:57 PM
@Everybody
Unfortunately, international students and regular action accepted students do not receive tubes.
Posted by: Snively on December 11, 2008 03:16 PM
The thing that bothers me most is that I have stuff to send in if I get deferred T.T I'd feel a lot better about how I presented myself in Early Action if I felt like I had covered everything important. On the other hand, that would make getting accepted feel that much better since I still had a little to add.

Sorry if my question is not in the right blog. It is just the waiting...

Posted by: Anonymous on December 11, 2008 06:11 PM
@Navdeep ('13?)
That's a cool page.
I was going for more simplistic, and I wanted it to work well on my iPhone. I also borrowed the color scheme from the MIT homepage for consistency.
Posted by: Brandon on December 11, 2008 06:11 PM
I really hope the early admission rates are higher this year because there were so many early admission applicants. Best of luck to everyone who applied!
Posted by: Derek M. on December 11, 2008 06:18 PM
I'm kind-of worried as an EA applicant about my SAT score. I'm confident about my writing and criticle reading, but I don't feel that a 710 math is very competitive. Does a 780 Math SAT IIC offset this? Thanks.
Posted by: Anonymous on December 11, 2008 06:31 PM
And argh, I meant to say "critical reading".
Posted by: Anonymous on December 11, 2008 06:32 PM
Any SAT score in the 700 range is competitive.
Posted by: anonymous on December 11, 2008 06:38 PM
Well, MIT does care more about math than the other two, so while competitive, his concern is at least reasonable. But yes, I'm sure the SAT II score supplements that!
My SAT scores are almost silly, though, like, "If you had 2200 points to distribute on your SAT, as a tech nerd, what would you do?" 800 math, 700 each in critical reading and writing. I know they're "competitive", but I still worry about my 700s ;.; I probably should've taken the reasoning test a second time, at least.
Posted by: Narce on December 11, 2008 06:48 PM
i only have one thing to say, and that's
T.U.B.E.S!
Posted by: Sarah T on December 11, 2008 07:12 PM
I just hope the SAT scores didnt factor in as importantly as the rest of the application since SAT stands for nothing and measures nothing.
Posted by: Samuel M. on December 11, 2008 07:16 PM
I won't say they stand for nothing, they're not the best measure of ones success in high school, there i will agree. but if u do good its not luck, u actually have to perform. if u don do so well, it doesn't necessarily mean u didn't perform, there could be a whole other list of reasons why your scores aren't what you want. its in inaccurate measure, but not entirely bad
Posted by: Justin on December 11, 2008 07:22 PM
I think SATs are rly useful. It provides a fair comparison between the applicant who attends a really good school and one who attends a mediocre school.
Posted by: Tiffany on December 11, 2008 07:26 PM
Its incredible how much you rationalization this whole admission thing. You start to think that you have a good chance, and then u start comparing yourself to other people which makes you feel like garbage. This whole things is just one big roller coaster of the mind.
Posted by: Kevin on December 11, 2008 07:38 PM
It isn't that "rly useful" because not only can you get the practice test and read it religiously from any school, wheter good or mediocre, but also, at least the math, only goes up to algebra two and maybe some trig. There are many people who take alg 2 in 8th or 9th grade so the SAT math really doesn't measure how good you are at math, but how bad you are: if you get a low score (below 600) it means you have a hard time with math. The english is another deal...I personally didn't do so hot in it :P
Posted by: Zeke on December 11, 2008 07:39 PM
I am such a big dork that I had to get on here and figure out what this early action thing was. Alex, let me know when you find out! Good luck everyone!

My good friend got into Caltech today
Don’t know if she will be going that way
But now I have become oh so disturbed
For Monday from MIT I’m deferred
Nightmares this week have me made so dreary
Springing from dreams I’ve long held so dearly
Maybe come Monday I’ll be very sad
Hopefully I won’t be feeling that bad
Worst come to worst, reality I’ll take
For worries - frowns don’t a sane person make
I hope made you smile have these poor verses
For on lips I’ve seen excessive purses.
Good luck to the applicants one and all
I do dare to hope, to meet you next fall

Posted by: Anonymous on December 11, 2008 10:22 PM
Oh applicants don't you fear
Even if it seems it's too much to bear
If you're deferred come a few days
There's still RA, the admissions officer says
Even though MIT may seem to be your dream
There's more ways to college than it seems
Of course, I wish you the best
As you find out the results of this test
Shall you be admitted, see you here next spring!
Shall you be deferred, it probably will sting -
But don't give up hope! never despair!
For some of us don't even know why we're here. :)

Posted by: Angela on December 12, 2008 03:48 AM
@ Zorayr Khalapyan
I disagree. The majority of EA apps are probably serious students with many outside activities who likely have little free time to spend blogging.
Posted by: gayle on December 12, 2008 04:44 AM
I'm starting to feel that parts of my app were pretty weak and doubt myself...
Posted by: Mel on December 12, 2008 06:22 AM
The more I think about it, the more I get nervous.
But I can't help it, so I'm just basically given up trying to not be nervous, and accept there's not much I can do.
I mean, it doesn't exactly help (I'm still way stressed), but it's a consolation of sorts, I guess.
Not really? I don't know; just trying to reassure myself.

Posted by: Justin on December 12, 2008 10:19 AM
hey guys, i'm sorry how stressed you are all about this, but dont start countin down how long till you get the decision.
you'll just be more stressed out and if you dont get in you'll be THAT much more disappointed. so go outside, watch tv, study for upcoming exams, do SOMETHING other than sit at a computer for hours posting on this blog.
Posted by: Anonymous on December 12, 2008 10:39 AM
here's a sonnet i wrote about a week or so ago when i wasn't feeling too hopeful:
December 15th
Creating scenes that have not yet occurred
Imagining what has not yet aris’n
Afraid of hearing what is not preferred
Entrapped in mind’s own agonizing pris’n
Conversing with the ones who understand
Enduring stress with comrades all around
Fatigued from an imperative demand
Submerged in Hell and trying not to drown
We fear the day approaching furtively,
Who holds in mighty hands our destinies.
Our futures he’ll declare assertively
Then leave our dying souls without appease.
Dreading the outcome unbeknownst to all,
We hold each other’s hands…let go…and fall…

Well, still. All of us are serious people; no question to that. And all of us are involved in numerous time consuming activities; I am sure you agree with this claim too. However, being the kind of caring student you are, do you actually believe that busyness is an excuse for not wishing luck to fellow applicants? Filling out a form with one line wish will at most take thirty seconds. That's about four times less time than it takes to brush one's teeth.
Anyhow, it was surprising to me that out of 5000 only about 1/100 blog. My theory to explain this relates to the nature of blogging in a college application environment. It seems that applicants would feel rather insecure to blog considering that their thoughts and writings might be read by the same students and officers who would be reading their oh-so-important college application. With these thoughts in mind, we can draw a conclusion that lack of blogging is because of the actual nature of the website and not because of the lack of time.
Of course, time is still a factor in determining any taken action. However, compared to the previously mentioned thought, time becomes negligible enough to be excluded from the general theory.
Don't you agree?
Posted by: Zorayr Khalapyan on December 12, 2008 10:22 PM
Zorayr - that's why I choose to be anonymous. :P
Technically, I suppose the site administrator could pull my IP address and trace it to my general location, and correlate that with the address on one of the applications, but I don't think they really have that much time on their hands. Besides, I've not said anything of particular interest that would really affect my application. Nobody here really has. It's unlikely they'd take interest.

and guess what! march 21st is our new year here!!! Will 'The Tube' be my new year's present?! :D Can't wait!
Posted by: Arash on December 13, 2008 08:15 AM
I'm an international applicant and so ED doesn't apply for me. I just checked the stats of last year admissions and my heart got caught in my throat. Less than 4% of international applicants got in?!!
Ahh well, I guess life's all about pushing for the extra edge. I'll know in March whether I have it or not...All the best to all those expecting their results on Monday!
Posted by: Varun on December 13, 2008 11:03 AM
The stress level is at a new height. As nervous as I am, its really exciting at the same time. The whole process is definitely a life changing one. I'm looking forward to Monday and really hope for the best for all of you. Thank you to everyone who posted and kept us updated on one of the most important decisions for us at the moment. Everyone keep your fingers crossed. Just remember (this is what everyone has been telling me) there is a place for you. If you don't get in somewhere, there is a reason for that. Don't let it discourage you, let it make you work harder and learn something more about yourself. I know this isn't going to stop those who are deferred to be upset, but just remember how many people are on the same boat. Everything at this point is out of our hands, we did what we could. Now all we can do is wait...

I am so nervous and I sporadically check the decision website in case there is some mistake and somehow the decision got posted. Is anyone else doing this? I absolutely love math with a passion and (of course) out of all of the schools I liked, MIT had the best math program. It would suck to not get in but my chances are just as low as everyone else's....

Oh, and even better, I have a 6 hour calc BC exam the next day, my teacher is nuts and gives inhumanely long tests. I will either be ecstatic or disconsolate during my marathon of a test...David, if you are reading this - yes it is me. For everyone else reading this, one of my close friends also applied EA and is constantly updating me on the latest blog. I thought it would be very eerie if he were reading this and wondering if I was actually posting on the blogs that he checks so religiously (as if any of you care). Oh well, I hope the people who deserve to get in get in.

1 day 10 hours 44 minutes...this is so nervewracking! i'm trying so hard to keep myself busy and not think about it, but that's near impossible. i'm sure all of us are freaking out in some way. i hope we all end up where we're meant to be!
i do believe everything works out for a reason. i'm sure we'll all be happy at whatever college we go to, even if it's not MIT. there are so many great colleges out there (of course, none of which compare to MIT, as we all probably think right now). but somehow we'll all make it through.
good luck to everyone!!!

And how uneventful a day Monday is!
1) OCPS wont let me out of school till 5
2) after school I'm wrapping gifts for a Christmas charity program
3) After that I have a FIRST robotics meeting
I probably wont get to see decisions until about an hour later or 11pm or something ridiculous.

Hey, I also abortively but passionately tried to find that bug that would reveal the decision a little earlier than the set date. But no - it's MIT. They don't bugs over there... Although there is a small security flaw in the MyMIT account log in page...

I completely agree with you. However, there is still that level of uncertainty which makes bloggers like you take that extra step of caution and declare as anonymous.
Posted by: Zorayr Khalapyan on December 14, 2008 11:34 AM
MIT is not only an educational mecca, it is a community, a family. To be a part of that family would be a blessing. Best wishes to students, families and all of those who anxiously wait.
Posted by: m on December 14, 2008 01:19 PM
To get your real address and match it with your MyMIT account would be impossible; your ISP wouldn't reveal your address without a subpoena (that's why RIAA needs to sue you to get your address). Much easier would be to crossmatch your IP from when you log onto MyMIT with the blogs: but what about kids who log in from the same school? What about kids who share their accounts... etc.
Admissions staff are people too; they remember kids from school visits, tours, presentations... But remember that 10+ people weigh in on your application before you get admitted, so no one person has too much influence on your application.

In other news, I'm rather lucky to have Internet right now, and might not have it tomorrow evening if the lines aren't back up. Ironically some parts of Massachusetts might be the last to get their decisions.

That reminds me, I've heard people on the blogs from past years be like "Yeah, all of my friends already got their tubes... I'm getting really anxious"... are there really schools up there with not one, not a couple, but SEVERAL accepted students every year? And are any of those public schools?!
Because I'm at the largest school in my state which is also the 2nd best in the state academically (public or private, but it's a public institution), and we've only had 3 accepted in history, 2 of which were in the same year.

Oh man, I know what you mean. I'm from a public school (roughly 4500-5000 students?). Only 2 have gone to MIT in its history. So I share your anxious feelings. I would also be willing to share some of my calculus homework :P
Or just find more things to do. I'll be playing my guitar. Anyone here like Muse?

Posted by: Jamo G on December 14, 2008 05:39 PM
Wow, other states have much larger student bodies than ours XD We have grades 10-12 at our school and that's about 2100 people. It would be just under 3k if we were a "full" high school. Our school is only 10 or so years old, but only 3 ever making it in is still depressing! (oh, and one of those three dropped out 2nd year or so)
I ran out of math at my high school, and Dual Enrollment classes are already finished for the year (like two weeks ago). *ahem* I love math, but I've had enough Calculus for the semester, thanks ;P Though I was surprised that I got to use Calculus 3 at the most recent math competition I took my team to >.> *sigh* I don't want to have to teach college-level math to my sophomore and junior minions for later competitions!

on the music issue, im kinda the other side of the spectrum i think...Linkin Park anyone?
Posted by: Justin on December 14, 2008 06:02 PM
I don't know how acclaimed your magnet school is, but we don't have a magnet school in my state better than my public school (not bragging, that's honestly how the rankings go), so believe me, in my last two years (remember, only 10, 11, and 12 here), I've seen my share of qualified individuals.
Two of the ones rejected from MIT ended up getting into Cal. Tech (in different years... but still, that's ridiculous considering Cal. Tech's class size), and another one went to Princeton (she was nerdy enough for MIT, but she was going to let the admission process decide for itself what she would major in... so when she got into Princeton, she picked Economics).
Posted by: Narce on December 14, 2008 06:02 PM
I see your point...I don't really know how we're ranked in my state, bcuz since we are a magnet school inside a regular high school, all our scores get averaged in with everybody else, thus making us not stand out so much.
All those who have went to MIt from my school have been asian (no offense, just stating a fact), which doesn't exactly bode well for me, being not asian.
Posted by: Justin on December 14, 2008 06:07 PM
Good luck everyone,
I want a tube!
Posted by: anonymous on December 14, 2008 06:15 PM
Two of the 3 I just mentioned from when I was here, that I called qualified applicants, were asian, and the last one white.
Two of the 3 I mentioned BEFORE that, who did get in, were Asian, including the one who dropped out of MIT around his second year. The last one... was white XD
I'm Hispanic... I know that MIT ends up accepting a lot of us, and my dad made it in too (I'm actually only half puerto rican, and that half is from him), but from our school, there are no Hispanic kids who even have had the grades to get into MIT, much less anything else. So I'm not sure where I stand relative to the rest of the United States' Hispanic applicant pool in this day and age....
But I, too, really want a tube!

In the mean time I'm going to pass time with Project Euler and study for my M371 final. Anyone Project Euler do that here?
Posted by: Zane on December 14, 2008 07:13 PM
I go to a public school of over 4000 kids in the Midwest which used to be one of the nation's top high schools (featured multiple times in multiple large magazines, books, etc) before they started basing rankings on how many kids take APs.
Every year there are at least 15-20 kids who end up going to Ivy League or their equivalents (MIT, Stanford, etc.), if not more, though only one person went to MIT last year.
Posted by: cc on December 14, 2008 07:29 PM
Lol.. I go to a high school that sends around 7-10 kids to MIT each year, out of a senior class of roughly 800, and that's considered really few... seeing as around 50 kids apply EA. Everyone's all scared, running around, "OMG only 7 kids got in last year! I'm not making it in!" and then I see these comments and it's kinda funny.
Also, I just recently started doing Project Euler. Yay Project Euler! It's really fun. :D
Posted by: Eek on December 14, 2008 07:34 PM
advice to all:
I know its nerve-wrecking to wait, but try to control urselves. the more hyped up you get, the more its going to hurt if you don't get in. i wish we could all go, as MIT is friggin amazing, but i know it isn't the case. good luck to all!
Posted by: Justin on December 14, 2008 07:38 PM
Maybe I'm just cynical, but I see everone's saying "good luck to all" as kinda dumb. Everyone knows that everyone can't get in, so wishing luck to everyone is pretty pointless. It's not like "good luck on exams" or "good luck with the surgery" or anything like that... it's "good luck" to a group of people when good luck to each individual person is a bit of bad luck to every other person in the group.

Tomorrow is going to be a nightmare. How can I possibly get through an entire day of school, an after-school deadline death march for newspaper, a chicken-soup-making for my boyfriend, a cooking dinner, and studying for finals? My mind is going to be on nothing but the three silly letters that have dominated my life for the past six months. And then after 9 I sure as heck won't be able to study at all, regardless of the decision. Strangely enough, a cold sweat and nausea have the same effect as pure, unadulterated elation when it comes to getting serious work done.
Posted by: Shreya on December 14, 2008 07:45 PM
@Samara
I would agree on the cynical. We all understand that only a select few of us will get in. common fact. I simply wish all good luck in a generous gesture, because I'm a nice person. I could come on and be like "I hope I get in and none of you do", but that would simply not be courteous in any way. But thank you very much for your obvious statement.
Posted by: Justin on December 14, 2008 07:46 PM
Very true
Posted by: Anonymous on December 14, 2008 07:46 PM
@Samara-
maybe we are all just trying to be nice, optimistic and supportive. You are right- we won't ALL get in, but we are all going through the exact same experience. Maybe "good luck" posted on the blog is really supposed to mean "good luck getting through the next few days without jumping off a bridge."
Furthermore, our acceptance/rejection/deferral has nothing to do with what we post here, so why not be nice? why not hope for the impossible? why not encourage other people's success?
hope to see you at MIT next year
Posted by: cat in the hat on December 14, 2008 07:52 PM
and good luck to you Samara, since you don't appear to be so fond of it.

You guys are so cute when you get your knickers in a twist.
Sorry to upset anyone.

did anyone else mysteriously get their midyear grade report box checked off recently? I don't think my college dude sent my mid year grade report to MIT, so just wondering if anyone else got their box checked off without sending in anything yet.
thanks...
Posted by: confused on December 14, 2008 08:01 PM
What's wrong with wishing people luck, Samara?! When I say good luck on the blogs, it's in the most sportsman way possible! Before a match in some sport, one person will almost always wish the other good luck, along with some kind of handshake or whatever (like in tennis...).
I'm saying "Good luck" and thinking "We've tried our hardest for this moment, so luck shouldn't help you beat me anymore."
Posted by: Narce on December 14, 2008 08:02 PM
Oh, so Samara just feels like screwing with people to make her(him?)self feel better during this period of nervousness.
While understandable, it's not the least bit admirable.
Posted by: Narce on December 14, 2008 08:04 PM
@samara
lol ur forgiven. i only argue principles and ideals. i still love all :) and... good luck to most? :)
Posted by: Justin on December 14, 2008 08:07 PM
@Narce
i think you should cool it. ragging on people via the internet is not admirable either.
Posted by: woahhhh on December 14, 2008 08:07 PM
I like the MIT blog b/c most ppl who post here are so nice. So Samara, plz don't ruin that by bringing in the bad-feel vibe.
My school is a public school too. Last year 13 ppl got in EA. I don't know how many of them ended up going to MIT though.

@to all
so...on to happier thoughts...anybody have suggestions on music they like? music is amazing...?
Posted by: Justin on December 14, 2008 08:09 PM
Whoa, everyone. I definitely did not mean to start a big fight. You're right, Narce... I am basically just messing with people. And cat in the hat and Narce - I guess I was thinking of "good luck" in the most obvious of terms. So good luck to everyone in the two ways you spoke of. And also good luck in the sense I originally meant it to the 11% of people or whatever who deserve to get in the most. I suspect I'm not in that 11%, so if I don't get in, so be it.
Narce is right - I am just anxious. Sorry everyone.
Posted by: Samara on December 14, 2008 08:12 PM
Justin - I happen to be a big old fan of R.E.M. Other bands I like are the Moody Blues, Oasis, Belle & Sebastian, and Jimmy Eat World.
Posted by: Samara on December 14, 2008 08:14 PM
@Justin
Yes, music is amazing. Currently listening to Bloc Party. Muse is good too. Anyone play any instruments?
Posted by: MITES 08 on December 14, 2008 08:22 PM
@MITES 08
naturally, play the oboe and percussion. good oboe players are hard to come by. im not one, and ive only seen one or 2 in my life.
@Samara
its all good, and as im just not realy getting into any type of rock, ill have to check those out...where i live, everybody goes crazy over rap and r&b...

I'm the first at my high school to apply to MIT ... ?
Posted by: another hopeful '13 ? on December 14, 2008 08:30 PM
No problem, Samara, I don't hold grudges. But what did you think would happen if you antagonized someone in an entire group of really anxious people? ;P
(and woahhhh, or whatever you go by when you're not making up a clever name to fit what you're saying... ;P to you too)
@Justin my favorite music is all Japanese... Tobira no Mukou E is my favorite song of all time. As for western music, the only song I have any particular attachment to is Viva la Vida.
Posted by: Narce on December 14, 2008 08:31 PM
Narce - I don't know... I guess I assumed you all were a lot more mature than I am.
Posted by: Samara on December 14, 2008 08:35 PM
I'm the second person to ever apply from my high school, the only other person applied RA 3 years ago and got accepted. I can't believe we are only 24 hours and 23 minutes away.
Wow.
Regardless, the experience has been great and I feel like I have learned a lot about myself through it. Good luck guys!
Posted by: Coleen on December 14, 2008 08:38 PM
I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, violin
I like Muse (XD), the offspring, my chemical romance, hoobastank, lostprophets, anberlin, classic crime, sugarcult, three days grace, sum 41, plain white t's, and more. OMG variety, dosen't really match at all, lol.
@Justin. I've got some bloc party and Linkin Park also. Awesome bands.
-Jamo (I need to go to more concerts, haha!)

sweet, big time strings player. I listen to stuff like soundtrack music (john williams, hans zimmer, danny elfman) as well as drum corps (DCI is amazing!!)

I'm the second person from my high school to apply. The first one applied in either 92 or 94 and got accepted.
Posted by: Carlos on December 14, 2008 08:46 PM
I like the songs they play on ipod commercials: 1234-Feist, Bruises-Chairlift. And other songs I currently like: Breathe Me-Sia, Viva la Vida-Coldplay, Love Song-Sara B., I'm Yours-Jason Mraz, Wordplay-Jason Mraz, Suddenly I See, and Float On- Goldspot(?).
Posted by: Tiffany on December 14, 2008 08:50 PM
chairlift is so cute.
kt tunstall is great too.
Posted by: another hopeful '13 ? on December 14, 2008 08:54 PM
There is a light a the end of this MITunnel! That's the good news. The bad news is that there's only a 10 percent chance it's the other side. The other 80 percent (with 10 more percent for those who get in RA after being deferred) is an on-coming train. Forgive my cynicism and less-than-perfect metaphor, but there is still hope left!
Posted by: T-minus 24 Hours on December 14, 2008 09:07 PM
Stay away from mainstream a little. Try The Shins(Australia and Turn on Me are good) and Interpol(listen to Heinrich Manuever first!). They are indie and their music isnt complete crap like whats on the radio today. These are other great bands I would recommend: A Perfect Circle, Disturbed, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Ladytron, Keane(I LOVE them), Brett Dennen, Alice in Chains. Happy youtubing.
Posted by: Cookie Lady on December 14, 2008 09:10 PM
yay, string instruments! I play guitar. I'm into rock and classical. I mostly play classical, but listen to rock. I won't even bother naming bands, because there are way to many to list, but I like indie, pop rock (as in not popular rock, but pop rock, like Head Automatica and The Strokes), and metal. I know, they're sort of opposites, but it works out some how. :D

Posted by: Matt A. on December 14, 2008 09:19 PM
@ Samara there are currently 231 responses (counting this once) Among those, there are repeated users, non-EA applicants, non-2013 applicants. Therefore, I say that we represent a separate class of MIT EA applicants who are clearly devoted and could all feasibly get in

I second Cookie Lady's suggestions, particularly The Shins and Interpol. Great bands. I would suggest The Strokes and Bloc Party, also great bands that are not mainstream and are very good. Indeed, most, if not all mainstream rock more or less sucks. ^_^

Mainstream where?
Posted by: Cookie Lady on December 14, 2008 09:35 PM
Cookie Lady - I concur.
By mainstream, I mean like Fall Out Boy/Paramore/Jonas Brothers. The Shins are definitely not on that status, at least in the US. Are you in another country?

Nope. Just in NYC

Most of us are probably the ones who are going to get deferred and although I have no experience in these type of situations, I believe that will probably take more than just few hours to get recovered from the extreme traumatic stress. In other words, d(blogs)/dt 9.

@ Samuel M: Six pages may be hectic, but my class is so used to writing long papers that my AP English teacher recently restricted us to two pages maximum. It really forces one to think about what they are saying as you can't add on the useless information you are used to adding on.

One person from my school got in three years ago; I have no idea if anyone else has got in or even applied. I'm kind of amused at the people talking about their "small" school sizes, though; 700 in one grade? That's bigger than my entire school xD. There are 161 kids in my senior class.
I'm not going to bother listing off the bands I listen to, as they're all obscure celtic/quebecois/contra dance/etc and no one would have any clue who I was talking about :P
The anticipation is making it very difficult for me to study for tomorrow's linear algebra final...

Best of luck to all EA applicants! And thanks to Matt and all the other admissions officers for spending so much time reading our applications and for making this process as transparent and enjoyable as possible. At the very least, it has been a valuable learning experience (about the application/admissions process in general; I think my other apps will be much less stressful as a result).
Tomorrow, I intend to eat cake and futilely attempt to complete my government outlines for the three hours between 6 PM PST and the 9 PM Heroes finale. Anyone else a fan?

Wow, guys. I am pretty stressed. I definitely have no focus right now. Even before the fire, the one source of calm at the moment, whose warth captures and numbs me, I burn; I ache to know. As the announcement draws closer, I realize more and more that this is truly the case; I ache to KNOW. There is a level of prestige associated with this school, but at the same time a friendly, embracing atmosphere that makes the friendly, embracing rejection message all the more sharp, biting. This message may be the last I ever post to the MIT website, it may be the first of many. All the same, no matter what poorly organized, completely incohesive ramblings I continue to jot, the hours that I despise do not ask how they ought to behave.
Good night, fellow applicants. I most sincerely hope that those who will get the greatest education and who will be happiest at MIT gain admission, even if that does not include me. And for those who do not, I hope just as deeply that you find the college that suits you.

So anxious I can hardly breathe. I spent about 3 hours freaking out at people.
I sincerely wish the best of luck for all, whether it be admission or perhaps another college which may better suit you.
Good night and good fight.

Lucky for me (or unlucky, depending on how you see it) I'm an international applicant, so I still have around 3 months of anxiety to deal with. Hope you all keep your head up high even after decisions are posted :D.

I've been writing a TOK journal entry since 5:00PM today about the wait, it'll be very interesting to read this in a couple of days/weeks/years...
Posted by: Zeke on December 15, 2008 07:09 PM
Wow. I can not get any studying done for my exams tomorrow, darn stress. My anxiety is such that it can not be communicated with words.... I sure do hope that there are no glitches with the decisions site....
Posted by: Jason on December 15, 2008 07:20 PM
Jeez dont u guys have homework
Posted by: Ehsan on December 15, 2008 07:23 PM
Good luck everyone. I'm trying not to get my hopes up because I know it's a long shot for anyone, but the wait is still killing me.
I think we all just need to reaffirm to ourselves that no matter the outcome, it's not the end of the world...
...Right?

I don't get in... I COMMIT SUICIDE. just kidding OR AM I
Posted by: Ehsan on December 15, 2008 07:33 PM
Yah we have homework but really we are trying to use this "anxiety" as an excuse. =) Actually really most of us are kind of ADD today with this distraction, but hey whatever I am trying to multitask right now. I can't believe judgement time would this exciting...NOT. =P

all my friends who applied to yale EA got deferred, and yale has a HIGHER early acceptance rate than regular. i am trying to come to terms with the fact that i'll be deferred/rejected. it sucks. but it's better than getting my hopes up. sorry to depress you all. you sound like amazing people and i REALLY hope you all get in. i wish we all could...i already feel like a connection with each of you just for having gone through this process too.

Yeah, I watch Heroes. I wasn't going to, but I might have to tonight just to cheer me up...wait sorry...think of the glass half-full...unless you're going into engineering; then it's a poorly designed container.
Oh well...21 min
Posted by: Nic on December 15, 2008 08:39 PM
haha i know! I'm definitely watching it as a cheer-me-up. And yes...I'm going into civil engineering...so the word "admit" being there is VERY unlikely.
Inside I'm still FREAKING out though!!!
