"A Conner 2 Trip to the North End"
A bunch of people from my floor decided to go to the North End to get pizza and pastries the other night. I didn't feel like writing about it so I decided to just film it instead. I present to you, what it would look like if you were an MIT student and went to the North End. Enjoy!

Posted by: deng on February 1, 2009 10:43 PM
Yeah. Can't believe I actually watched the whole thing.

Wow Snively, a blog being narrated with a video (vlog?) its a nice break from the quotidian.
While watching the videos I noticed some stuff:
1-. MIT is bigger of what I thought it was.
2-. Those pastries seemed to be really delicious.
3-. Mason is fun :)
4-. Your gang (can I call them a gang?) seem to be really nice and fun.
5-. "Still Alive" gave a winning end to the 2nd video. (was that you singing along with GLaDOS?)
6-. You made me more eager to ride a subway train (Where I live there are no trains D:, or subways(we have restaurant subways))

@Julio
1) MIT really is quite long, but it's all one long strip so it's not too easy to get lost.
2) The pastries are delicious.
3) Mason is fun, check out his blog at http://www.geekbyday.com and some of his other dancing skills here
4) We try
5) That was actually the guy who composed and wrote the song. Somebody mixed the two versions together.
6) The T is incredibly useful for getting around, we use it all the time.

Love the soundtrack, especially the Bon Jovi "Living on a Prayer"! That took me back to the 1980s! Thanks. You're a rockstar, Snively.
Posted by: Quinton on February 2, 2009 12:46 AM
Sweet editing, were you using iMovie?
Rofl for some reason I watched both videos too and I must make a note here: huge success!

The video blog is awesome Snively and you rock. Everything in the video is just so wonderful that I have to thank you for such a great post.

So , did you ever settle with Star Simpson on Electrofuzzles?
Posted by: Anonymous on February 2, 2009 02:56 AM
Man Snively, you make me SO anxious to get out there to Boston! I can't wait til CPW and then finally to go out there for reals! =D
Posted by: Richard '13 on February 2, 2009 03:01 AM
Yeahhhhhh, MGMT.
Posted by: '12 on February 2, 2009 04:31 AM
Wait, you just WALKED IN to Regina? Where's the hour-long line?!
Posted by: Sam on February 2, 2009 05:05 AM
Wow Snively, Great Post! As Always...
I wonder, what are the songs you used in the video clips? They are nice to hear - I could only identify Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer
Another question: How long did it take you to know the routes and places around MIT and around Boston? It seems like a really big and confusing place...
Posted by: Jesse L on February 2, 2009 07:20 AM
@Kevin
Yeah, I used iMovie. I'm experimenting with different video editing software to find one that I like the best. My three test subjects are iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, and SpeedEdit. And to those of you whom I KNOW are going to say it, no, I'm not going to use premier. Yes, I know it's good. No, I don't want to overcome the learning curve.
@Anonymous
Several patent attorneys assured us that the ideas were different enough that they could be separately patented.
@Sam
It was a Thursday night, but we were surprised too. I've never been able to just walk in before. There was no line at Mike's either.
@Jesse L
The first is called "Prisoner of Society," then "Shippin' Up to Boston" by the Dropkick Murphys, then "Time to Pretend" by MGMT.
In the second video, the first song is "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi, the second song is "Pork and Beans" by Weezer, and the final song is "Still Alive" by GLaDOS and John Coulton.
Posted by: Snively on February 2, 2009 09:32 AM
This is a rly great idea. I just wish that there hadn't been such a big difference between the music and the dialogue.

XD
Bunch of geeks!
Posted by: Michelle from Israel on February 2, 2009 12:36 PM
Also, damn! I can't watch the end of the 2nd video because the song playing in the background is the song from the game Portal, which I haven't played yet, and it's full of spoilers!

Posted by: Michelle from Israel on February 2, 2009 12:53 PM
Hey, small doubt.. What is CPW ?
Posted by: saasha on February 2, 2009 01:13 PM
@Michelle from Israel:
The song that plays and the end of the 2nd video ("Still Alive") contains no real spoilers. Unless you analyze the song verse by verse, and use some logic, then it will have spoilers, but if you just listen to it no spoilers will happen :) (you can also just turn down the volume).
@saasha:
CPW stands for Campus Preview Weekend. It is pretty self explanatory.
@Snively:
Did you use "Still Alive" at the end of the 2nd video as an inside joke? Since you bought pastries (cake?) and you used a Portal reference, were you trying to state that the cake isn't a lie (I guess you played Portal) after all?
PS: The cake is a lie! Pies are real.

Hey Snively! Great post, as usual. I've gotta ask what video camera you use? I was thinking about buying one for my blog (which is linked on my name), and your video seemed pretty high quality for being uploaded. (Whenever I upload it on youtube it usually messes up the quality.) I was thinking maybe it's just youtube's fault?
Thanks ;-)

so.. in december, i got deferred. This was after obsessing over MIT. Getting deferred, to me, was like asking the girl I've liked for a couple years to go out with me, and her to slap me in the face and say "I'm way out of your league!", even though it was more like a "hey, listen I think I might go out with you, but i need more time to think. I'll tell you later." Anyways, this shifted my focus to other schools such as C.U. I told myself that I was not meant for MIT. However, as time moves on, I seem to gravitate more and more towards MIT. I constantly read the blogs and watch OCW videos of Prof. Auroux teaching multivariable calc.in a French accent (similar to my parents') and of Lewin in the E and M course. Now when I look at videos like these: snow, time to pretend, pizza, snow, cold (I live in Florida ): ), my stomach seems to flip upside down. MIT always seems to cause my stomach to spontaneously combust or for butterflies to burst out of my mouth. To me, this is a constant reminder that I am meant for that school. If I don't get in, I'll get over it; however, I'll never stop thinking of what could have been.

Great video blog! It gave me a good idea of what traveling around MIT is like (including dodging cars). You should do that more often. After all, if a picture is worth 1000 words, how many words is a video worth?
Posted by: Derek M. ('13 hopeful) on February 2, 2009 07:30 PM
@Vinay
Yeah, YouTube screws with video quality, and now they've done something that's pretty much turned me to Vimeo full time. YouTube analyzes your videos for music and if it finds copyrighted material it will mute your video. Vimeo is much higher quality and doesn't censor your content, a win win situation for me.
Also, here's the type of camera I use.
Posted by: Snively on February 2, 2009 08:55 PM
Yeah I really like the camera, but I want something more compact so I can bring it to parties and all that jazz. And, yes, I have also started to hate youtube.

My feet hurt and I'm shivering just from watching these awesome vids. I can't wait till I do these things...I loved the music, the speed, and the comments.

That so true, I feel the same way sometimes. I hope you get in. I too sweat with anxiety everytime I think of MIT.

I used iMovie to recreate a "70's" Physics lecture, theres this option that changes the leveling of the different video segments. Keep that in mind if you ever want to create something psychedellic with normal video haha. i personally prefer iMovie
@ K.Klenot
haha i tend to try not to sweat but in miami its inevitable

Hi Snively,
thanks for answering my question. But I have a little problem. I have six national level exams which I have to take at any cost and the exams are from April 5 to May 20. See I can't attend CPW even if I want to. So, is it compulsory for all admitted students to attend CPW ? And another question is when are international students required to be at MIT i.e students of class of 2013 ? I cannot leave my country till june. Please tell me.
Posted by: saasha on February 4, 2009 12:44 PM
@Saasha
CPW is not mandatory at all. As for arriving at MIT, international students arrive in mid-August for International Orientation, so you should be fine with that.
Posted by: Snively on February 4, 2009 12:55 PM
Thanks a lot for that Snively. Really, you made my day amidst my Practical and lab exams this week. Thanks a loooot.
Posted by: saasha on February 4, 2009 01:28 PM
Hye Snively,
I asked about blogging few days back, remember. I was just wondering if you could tell me whether having an own blog for being a blogger at MIT is mandatory ? What do they look for in your blog ?
Posted by: angelina on February 4, 2009 01:32 PM
I was very disappointed not to get to see any actual *pizza* and/or *eating of the pizza*! Nice tunnel shots, though. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. ;-)

Hey,
I got a score of 108 out of 120 in Toefl(ibt).Is it good enough for getting admitted as a transfer student in MIT?
