Experiences Abroad: Study, Research, Employment

There are a number of options for study outside of MIT:

  • participation in one of a number of MIT Study Abroad Programs (including student exchanges),
  • direct application to a foreign university,
  • enrollment in a foreign study program sponsored by a U.S. university,
  • enrollment in a foreign study program operated by a private organization,
  • or even a semester at sea!

Some of MIT's Student Exchanges and other study abroad opportunities include:

  • The Cambridge-MIT Exchange Program
    The Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI) was established in July 2000 as a strategic alliance between MIT and the University of Cambridge. The Undergraduate Exchange Program provides many exciting opportunities for undergraduate study abroad. Fifteen MIT departments and nine Cambridge departments participate in the exchange.
  • MIT-Madrid Program
    The MIT-Madrid Program enables MIT students to take courses at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid and/or the Universidad Complutense de Madrid during the spring semester.
  • Delft Exchange
    Each fall, two MIT undergraduates will have the opportunity to study architectural design a t Delft University of Technology (TUD).
  • MISTI International Education at MIT
    Since 1994, MISTI has been providing MIT students and faculty with the skills and opportunities to create new knowledge through:
    • intensive professional internships for culturally aware MIT students in companies, research laboratories, and universities around the world;
    • support of MIT faculty for cross-border research collaborations and providing students with study-abroad opportunities at selected universities abroad;
    • facilitating research opportunities for international students and postdoctoral visitors at MIT;
    • working with corporations, government, and non-governmental organizations to internationalize industry, education, and research;
    • organizing meetings, conferences, and training workshops with sponsor companies, governmental agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

    MISTI has opportunities available in the following countries:

    • Mexico
    • Spain
  • Killam Fellowship
    The Killam Fellowships Program is a new initiative sponsored by the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America. The Killam Fellowship provides exceptional undergraduate students (typically in their junior year) from select universities in Canada and the United States with the opportunity to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student during their undergraduate career.
  • Minor in Applied International Studies
    This six-subject minor is organized along three areas that address key components of international education. The first area is language and culture, the second area is international politics, economics and history and the third area is a significant international experience which could be study, research or an internship abroad.
  • International Research Opportunities Program (IROP)
    IROP oversees research opportunities that provide a global experience and help students to connect with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. It's a UROP abroad!
