"Real Financial Heroes"
This fall, I taught my first Freshmen Advising Seminar. The topic was Personal Finance, and I have my own course number (YAY!) -- SEM.145.
I had a great group of Freshmen Advisees (and two terrific Associate Advisors, including Anthony). We met weekly and discussed issues like budgeting, managing credit, planning for major puchases down the line, investing, and other topics. Each week we started with a series of videos from Youtube, and then launched into a review of the topic. On some occasions, we had guest speakers, in other occasions class projects, and other times a more frontal lecture with plenty of discussion. We used as our text Personal Finance which was a terrific resource (and one I bought the students so that they didn't have to spend the money on another text). We also took some time every week just to eat, schmooze, and visit as a group.
So, to give you a flavor of the course, I thought I would present one set of videos we watched to launch the topic of budgeting. This series is called "Real Financial Heroes" and is, I think, a great way to start any discussion of our current economic woes. If it rings painfully true, and some of the video will for some of you (it did for me), it's the best kind of learning. To quote an oft-used mid-80's Saturday Night Live line, "We Laughed, We Cried, It was Better than Cats!" Hope you enjoy the videos! I cannot take credit for creating them, but they certainly launched our adiving group into a great discussion!

Next up for our advising group, a night out on the town to see "Blue Man Group" and to eat at PF Changs. This is our end of year outing, so I'll post something more about it in May!
