massachusetts institute of technology freshman admissions portal/community v. 2.0

"Online Decisions To Be Released This Saturday"

Hi folks,

Jess sent me an email a few days ago making fun of me for being completely awol from the blogs recently. She's right, and I apologize; we've been working 7-day weeks since January reading all of your applications and selecting the class in committee. This time next week I'll be enjoying my first day off in quite awhile, and my blogging should return shortly thereafter.

I'm pleased to let you know that we're on schedule to release decisions online at noon (Eastern Time) on Saturday March 15. They will be mailed via postal mail a few days later, most likely on Monday, March 17 or Tuesday, March 3/18.

Decisions will be available online to those who meet all of the following criteria:

  • You have applied for freshman admission (not transfer or graduate).

  • Your intended entry year (as designated in your MyMIT account) is 2008.

  • You applied in Regular Action, or were deferred in Early Action (the system is unable to display decisions for those who applied in Early Action and received a "final" action in December - i.e. admitted or denied).

------------------------------

What is the process for receiving my admissions decision online?

In order to check your decision online, you will need to have registered for a MyMIT account and you will need to know your username and password. When decisions are released, simply visit https://decisions.mit.edu and log in using the same username and password that you use to log into your MyMIT account. There are no interim screens, so you should be sure you wish to receive your decision online before logging in to decisions.mit.edu.

Please note that you can visit https://decisions.mit.edu beginning tomorrow (Monday, March 10) to confirm your username and password. We will not be in the office on the weekend that decisions are released, so to prevent any delays, you should confirm your username and password well in advance.

What if I've forgotten my MyMIT username or password?

You may use our automated system to reset it. Simply visit my.mit.edu and click on the "lost username" or "lost password" link.

What if I don't have a MyMIT account?

If you do not currently have a MyMIT account and you wish to receive your decision online, you will need to register for one using your MIT ID, which was sent to you via postal mail soon after receiving your paper application (if you used the online application, you already have a MyMIT account). If you have misplaced your MIT ID, or if you never received it, you may call our office to get it (please note that you will be asked to give some personal information for verification).

If you register without your MIT ID, your username and password may not work on decisions.mit.edu.

------------------------------

Hang in there - only a few more days of waiting!

The wait is almost over!!

Posted by: Priya on March 9, 2008 10:28 AM

Iam so excited that I cant even complete what I wanted to say at once... Sigh, thanks Ben!!!

~Starts crossing fingers very very anxiously.... ~

Posted by: Shruthi on March 9, 2008 10:29 AM

Hahaha, this was really funny. I was just checking out Ben's most recent posts including the one he made in December regarding the EA guys. I navigated back to the front page and WOW, an update? I had to check the date several times just to make sure I wasn't fooling myself.

Yay for desicions!

Posted by: Eirik on March 9, 2008 10:31 AM

Yay for _decisions_ grr

Posted by: Eirik on March 9, 2008 10:33 AM

Oh... My... God... I am feeling like I have a cyclotron in my stomach... (Bad, but did ya expect any worthy humour from someone in my condition ?)

Posted by: Soaham on March 9, 2008 10:45 AM

Any Indians here planning to take the JEE ??

If u get admitted, will u still be taking it ?

OMG!
Anyway, my anxiety will end soon!

Posted by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008 11:03 AM

Oh yeah... I still can't use myMIT. I tried creating a new account, and it wouldn't let me (can't use the same info for 2 different accounts). I can't delete the old account either. Should I call SFS to make sure they have my financial aid paperwork?

Posted by: Hawkins on March 9, 2008 11:05 AM

I might take the JEE.. I think I will... I dont know man, seriously.... OMG!!!!!!! (My vocabulary has been woefully restricted to these few words as of now)

This will be the longest week of my life.

Now i have to wait for the chem exam to get over and for decisions
*sigh*

Posted by: Aditi on March 9, 2008 11:08 AM

A real paradox as i was hoping for this blog to come and was reading the notification for EA, the time this blog was posted. This will be a real nerve wrecking week for all the hopeful's. Thanks Ben for the information and we eagerly await your return to the " world of blogging ".

Posted by: Shubhang on March 9, 2008 11:08 AM

yeah... a recommendation for the MIT '13 applicants.. Never make a deal with your friend to wait for snail mail to find out are you admitted...

god... i have to wait till thursday now or something..

are you going to use FedEx to notify internationals about admission?

Posted by: OHMG on March 9, 2008 11:08 AM

Oh. My. God

Posted by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008 11:10 AM

So Aditi you too are giving the ISC Board Exams?

Posted by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008 11:10 AM

It will be a real challenge to keep your mind on the Chem Exam with your mind only thinking about 15th 15th 15th 15th 15th ..............

And this is why you should never listen to me.

Or. . . you can assume that I was preparing you for the worst and now you can be really happy!

Or . . . I just had no idea what I was talking about.

Posted by: Kal on March 9, 2008 11:36 AM

Ahhh!!!
Every year you guys set the date to the Saturday of the FIRST Silicon Valley Regional.
There is no free access wifi at that university.
There will be at least 20 of us stuck there till 6 PM waiting for our decisions(9 PM EST).

Posted by: Yuzhi on March 9, 2008 11:37 AM

I can't believe decisions are just around the corner after all this waiting....
I'm ambivalent about March 15th. I want the day to be here now, but at the same time I don't want to know because it will be the end of a dream for so many of us...
Good luck to everyone.. I wish we could all get in.

Thank you, Ben!
This week will be one of my longest...

Posted by: KaYnaR on March 9, 2008 11:54 AM

Guys relax I just realized that it is more important that we relish these moments until Saturday and not let anxiety take over us (as curiosity killed the cat) for we no matter, we get in or not, will one day remember these days and will revel in them.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008 11:58 AM

To quote Paul " It is more important how we play the game ". Sorry for double posting

Posted by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008 12:01 PM

@AA
Why such an aversion to the IIT's ?? They are not far behind the best in the world. And do remember that while MIT is on the top because of the astounding amount of stuff going on at its campus (research nd stuff), IIT is ranked pretty high, solely on the strength of its graduates (which is what we are all trying to be)
@ Shruthi
I can understand... Been OMG'in ever since I read this one. Must be a real pain with ur boards on... Nice that I got rid of this little inconvenience an year ago :-)

Posted by: Soaham on March 9, 2008 12:03 PM

Thanks Ben for the post!

So most of us only have 6 more days of dreaming of MIT. One more OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Ana on March 9, 2008 12:05 PM

@anonymous person , yes i am. =(

OMG!
(again)

@Snively , maybe now would be a good time to revive 'a shorter wait'? =)

Posted by: Aditi on March 9, 2008 12:10 PM

Less than a week away! Is it possible to be even more excited now than when I was getting my own decision? Hehe, we'll finally be able to welcome the rest of the '12 class! Good luck to everyone! You guys can do it! =)

Posted by: Raina on March 9, 2008 12:11 PM

wow, here we go again! It's been an amazing journey to go on for me, all the people I've met along the way are truly brilliant and no matter the decision, I look forward to the changes our generation can make for the future, for ourselves, and for posterity.

Posted by: Chris on March 9, 2008 12:14 PM

Posted by: MIT'11 on March 9, 2008 12:37 PM

@Yuzhi: Each year, it's on the Saturday of the Midwest regional, too! We have WiFi, though, and this year they moved the regional to week 1 :) I can totally sympathize with your plight, though - you're exactly in the same place as our programmer from last year. He got in - good luck to you :)

Good luck to everyone else! I'm off to put down a housing deposit at University of Illinois, just in case the 15th doesn't bring good news :)

Posted by: Karen on March 9, 2008 12:40 PM

Best of luck everybody!

Posted by: Tong on March 9, 2008 12:41 PM

Woah... I wasn't expecting the 15th! wow, this is my spring break... so I guess it's going to be even longer? I need to find distractions maybe?

Posted by: Jeseth on March 9, 2008 12:41 PM

Finally! I was kind of hoping that they would be released on pi day, but Saturday is good enough. I didn't think I would hear about any colleges until almost the end of the month, but it turns out that I should find out about CalTech tomorrow or tuesday and MIT on saturday.

This is exciting...

Good luck everyone.

Good luck to everybody who, like me, has awaited the MIT decisions for years. It seems silly, but sometimes a college can be love-at-first-sight.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008 04:05 PM

OMG (again)

This Saturday will really be a defining moment in my young life - there will be the "age of pre-noon" and "the aftermath", or the "age of post-noon". Will I begin planning and move to a new country next year, or will I enroll in the air force and go to Afghanistan for a couple of months? (That is my current backup plan). Then I'll have plenty of time applying next year.

GOOD LUCK!

Posted by: EV on March 9, 2008 04:25 PM

I'm so scared!!

Posted by: Gosia on March 9, 2008 04:32 PM

Good Luck everyone!

Whoa, Ben's a day early with the announcement!

Good luck to everyone! Wow, the wait was a lot shorter than I thought it would be. But I'm overjoyed (and nervous as hell) that the day is coming. In less than a week. o_O

I'll probably write an app to automatically launch my web browser to decisions.mit.edu at noon on Saturday. Or work on some cool project like that. Much better to while away the time coding than stressing out about decisions. =D

$ crontab -e
0 0 15 03 * DISPLAY=":0" /usr/bin/x-www-browser https://decisions.mit.edu

if you are in an other timezone, you have two choices:
1°/ translate the time to EDT's one
2°/ ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Eastern /etc/localtime (be sure to restart cron after that. yes, it's the glibc which manages timezones)

(using debian sid)

Posted by: Chanddeep on March 9, 2008 08:01 PM

I hope the committee had a fun time selecting students despite the fact that the committee had to turn away many great students. Personally, I am ready to accept any decision MIT makes, whether it is rejecting, waitlisting, or accepting(hopefully) me. I can accept rejection because I know many great people are applying to MIT and MIT cannot accept all of them. I can accept waitlisting because I'll still have a chance. It is obvious that I am going to accept being accepted.

Posted by: Patrick Tam on March 9, 2008 08:18 PM

Just wondering... I had been considering sending in an email or fax to admissions, talking about what I'd been doing since I applied, to kind of say "Here I am! Look at me, look at me, I still want to go to MIT! Look at all this awesome stuff I did!" but then I considered, that seems like something that a lot of people would do, and it'd only sound derivative and unoriginal - so I ended up not doing it.

So Ben, did a lot of people do this type of thing, and at what point would it not have mattered (i.e., did you already have pretty-much-final decisions about people March 1)?

Good Luck to all of my RA peeps!! I can't believe I'm getting alll astressed all over again, but hey, it's the tvte!

Posted by: Chris B. '12 on March 9, 2008 08:50 PM

OMG It's official, thank you, Ben.

7 days to go.I won't be able to find it out until Saturday night, due to the State Science Olympiad competition. I will not be able to access the Internet or use the phone. I wish I could find a PC somewhere during the lunch break that day at the West Point. Good luck, everyone !

Posted by: HappilyNerdy88 on March 9, 2008 09:13 PM

I applied early and got deferred...so I've been waiting for a looonnnng time! Me and a friend made a deal to wait for the mail...but knowing that the decision is just waiting on my computer might be too much for me. This time its final...no deferring until a later date! Unfortunantly its hard to be excited, because I'm pretty positive that I will be rejected : (
Good luck everyone.

I'm in this state of hope and pessimism. Lately, I have been seeing a lot of things concerning MIT in my everyday life without me looking for them. Maybe this is a sign? Silly things like that get me hopeful. Maybe if I want it bad enough, it'll happen or something. Good luck to all with waiting. I'm going to find the nearest SSBBrawl and wait.

Posted by: Jesse on March 9, 2008 09:59 PM

Oh, lol just noticed Shauna's post. It would be awesome if we all got in!!

Posted by: Javal on March 9, 2008 09:59 PM

Lydia you could always be wait listed. That's what Caltech did to me, deferred then wait listed. I also got deferred at MIT so hopefully they will see the error in their ways and let me in this time.

Posted by: Nick on March 9, 2008 09:59 PM

I'm so incredibly excited and nervous. It just so happens that on the date the decisions come out online I'll be in West Point for the New York State Science Olympiad competition (referenced already by HappilyNerdy88). I also really hope I can find a computer somewhere so I don't have to wait until we get back at roughly two in the morning on Sunday.

Talk about a nerve-wracking weekend!! :D

Of course, as so many of you have pointed out, it's right after Pi day, so that makes it extra special.

Best of luck everyone!

Posted by: Charles on March 9, 2008 10:14 PM

Travis, I noticed that too! Ides of March...this is definitely an omen. We are all getting rejection letters! :(

Posted by: Sam on March 9, 2008 10:32 PM

i wonder how many other jamaicans applying. well, good luck to the other jamaicans applying, as a matter of fact, good luck to everyone. don't want to be pessimistic or anything, but i think i got rejected, so i guess i won't catch the mit joy fever. bracing myself for the rejection.

Posted by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008 11:08 PM

Heh Anonymous I'm doing the same. I just have this feeling that I didn't get in. Which part of Jamaica are you from. I'm from MoBay.

Posted by: Shauna on March 9, 2008 11:19 PM

Beware the ides of March! I hope too many of us don't feel like we're being betrayed here.

Posted by: Alexander on March 9, 2008 11:24 PM

@ Sam: My english teacher, for some odd reason, said that the Ides would be a good sign! I'm going to have to ask him about it.

At any rate, when that fateful decision-releasing button is pushed, some of us will be rejected, others accepted, and a few waitlisted. I guess that's life. (Personally, I anticipate crying regardless of my decision- THAT'S how much I love MIT!)

Posted by: Travis on March 9, 2008 11:30 PM

Whew. I thought that the decisions would be only sent via mail and I was devastated at first because my mailing address is not the same as my permanent address. Considering that I'm on Spring Break, I would have had to wait another week. ToT Yay for online decisions!

Thought really, it would've been highly ironic if MIT did NOT release their decisions online, ey?

I haven't posted here before but oh my god. I am feeling the most awful combination of utter terror mixed with a bit of excitement and a TON of adrenaline. I can't imagine the next six days will be any different...

It's funny.
As I read through this post I started freaking out, but as I reached the comments I couldn't help but grin.

It seems all of us are in the same boat and I'm finding a little comfort knowing that this state of "freak-ed-out-ed-ness" is perfectly natural.

Being the umpteenth post, I'm sure this will never be read but nonetheless: Good luck to everyone!!! I'm SO stoked!!!

Posted by: K. Umezawa on March 10, 2008 02:04 AM

My friends and I are joking in statistics that the only way I will be accepted would be if a type II error occured in my 95% confidence-rejection-interval.

Well good luck to everyone. Horray to DayLight Savings, which means we get our decision one hour earlier than the rest of the world that isn't on day light savings :D

WHY NOT ON PI DAY!? C'mon that'd give us some luck right?! The almighty greek letter for 3.141592... (ok I'm too lazy to type all the digits I know out) ...would give us some luck!!!

This is making so hard to concentrate on anything else! Not good considering this week is last one of the second trimester so teachers decided to pile on tons of projects, but I'll manage. Oh..some part of me can't wait, and the other really just wants to stay in limbo forever ;)

Posted by: Danny Trinh on March 10, 2008 11:26 PM

I have to say, it's a bit of a surreal experience being this close to a decision. I've been wanting to go to this school ever since I realized that it seems to be a haven for those like me. (Id est, those freaks with a masochistic affinity towards math and science ;D) Six years I've had my heart set on this school, and that drive alone has pushed me to become the sort of person that sits at a keyboard today typing the disjointed ramblings of a high school senior. Now I come to the end of a very specific journey in my adolescent life, four and a half days from finding out that it was (probably) all for naught.

And that doesn't bother me one little bit.

That's because the most important thing I've learned over this blind drive to achieve is one pure and simple fact: At the end of the day, all of your goals and all of your dreams are for one person ... yourself. At this point, it doesn't really matter whether I'm accepted or not because I realize that I don't really need some sort of validation from anybody but myself. I know that I've not only done my best, but elevate that definition of "my best" to encompass characteristics above and beyond anyone could have predicted from me.

So thank you MIT. You've done a lot for me, even if you don't know it.

Posted by: Rob ... again on March 10, 2008 11:43 PM

@ anon way up in the blogs:
(yes, I read all of the comments)
I pestered one of the coaches a ridiculous amount hoping that it somehow helps me to get in. Not as an annoyance, but everytime I had new news, he got it.

Oi. I'm so nervous. I went through this EA, and this time is no better, knowing that if it isn't a "pleased to offer you admission" than there are no more chances. I know that wherever I am meant to go, I'll go, but I truly feel like MIT is the best fit for me and I hope that the admissions officers feel the same (I even wrote an essay on that!) Anyone who is considering applying to MIT or any other school in the coming years: I strongly suggest visiting the school and getting the feel. I took a college trip (in February! COLD!!) last year to Harvard and MIT. After Harvard, I thought nothing could compare. I began the next day sitting in on an MIT chem class and knew that no college could EVER top MIT for me.

Hence my nerves.

Good luck to all, even though there is really no such thing as luck. aka I wish you well aka may the statistics and God be with you.

Posted by: Ryan on March 10, 2008 11:49 PM

@God, sorry, but even if I get in I will still be an evolutionist.

@Ben, will you admit me if I promise to do Hercules' 12 tasks?

@all yalls guys
e is so much better than pi.

alpha=e^2/(hbar*c*4pi*epsilon[0]) is even better!!!

Posted by: nMAD on March 11, 2008 05:48 AM

@shauna

I am some hours from where you live. I am from st.mary. I've been visiting the blogs everyday since i saw the post that decisions will be released on saturday. i wish i had not seen it so early, so i wouldn't feel so nervous already. although i think i've been rejected, i hope i am wrong, but if i am right, life goes on and i am still gonna be a physicist anywhere i go. i'll just let fate decide where i'm supposed to study to become one.

GOOD LUCK!

Yeah, it does seem like Indians make up the largest pool of international applicants...

But seriously yaar, Buri tarah fat rahi hai... dimag ghoom raha hai, dil ghode ki tarah daud raha hai anur aatma gale ke raste bahar aane ko machal rahi hai...

(No body bother reading the second par. Not in english anyways... Just random ramblings in a state o hyper-excitement)

I'll be taking the JEE.. It's not the getting in part.. its just a challenge!! I mean you're at the top of your school.. everyone thinks you're a 'miss know it all'.. Here's a chance to finally prove what you're made of.. (and it only tests your cranial capacity)

Dunno how i'll do .. but looking forward to it..

Good luck to everyone! I really hope everyone gets in. But in the meantime I think I may read every blog on here trying to calm anticipation.

Posted by: soaham on March 11, 2008 12:31 PM

To Kathryn: That's actually a good thing. At least you won't find yourself on the internet 24/7.

I wish I missed this blog entry. What's worse it that I have exams! I should be studying!!

Posted by: Fatin on March 11, 2008 12:36 PM

I have a regatta at UCSB on Saturday. That means I'm going to be on my friends iPhone sitting on a sunny SoCal beach in a swimsuit when I read my admissions decision. That way even if I do get the big reject I still get to enjoy the nice breeze and sunny day. :D Have fun on your computers on sat. Just know I'm right there with you getting some sun... by the way, what's the temp in Cambridge right now? Why its a balmy 35... hopefully i get to experience that next year.

Good luck guys, have fun this week. Try not to sit with your head banging on the keyboard looking at the decisions page. That's gonna be a challenge for me.

peace

Posted by: enewts on March 11, 2008 12:58 PM

@ Fatin - See that's what you think, you know? What common sense tells you. But the really funny thing is that I will seek out internet in order to try and see if they leak information earl, knowing full well tht they won't.

And what's even worse is that I will have my mom seeking out the information that won't even come out till saturday. Aaah!

Posted by: Kathryn on March 11, 2008 12:59 PM

@nMAD...WOW!!!I am from Bangladesh too!! so r u goin to the DSA on the 15th??...I sure think I am gonna skip it.

ok, there's this song that has been annoying me for almost a year because I couldn't figure out what it is. I just was lucky enough to hear it on TV, and within 12 hours of finding out that decisions will be released, I discover the song is "Don't stop believing." Coincidence? Actually, this is freaking me out in other ways too that I couldn't explain here.

and an English speaker, of course.

It doesn't matter where we are from. All that matters right now is whether we can meet each other at MIT.Right?
@Sabreena So am I... Tension and excitement. can't concentrate on anything else.

^ I'm kind of doing that! Me and a friend are making pies for calculus class. We're thinking about raspberry.

Posted by: Taylor on March 11, 2008 08:53 PM

Someone up there said this was surreal and that is exactly the word I would use to describe it. I just can't fully comprehend that in [way] less than a week I will either have obtained what has basically been a life's goal for me or you know...have to go to another school. Which would be okay, I guess.

Heh, here's a story: My parents work at MIT so I've been around the campus my whole life and I've always owned an MIT sweatshirt. Around application season [so, December] my sweatshirt started to get really ratty and not nearly as soft as it used to be.. but I haven't been able to justify getting a new sweatshirt until I hear back.. I think the thing I will be most upset about is not being able to justify an MIT sweatshirt any more. =[

Not sure, but we have to give it a run.

Anyone else in AP Spanish? We have to read a bunch of poems for tomorrow. I like how this is turning into an international thread of sorts. Pretty cool to see how much diversity has just applied to MIT. Anybody repping Italian (I wish I knew how to speak it) or Spanish?

I am not from India neither my mother language is Hindi, but I can understand Hindi. Let's look at the meaning of what anonymous wrote on March 11, 4-59pm:
"We are talking more about JEE,CBSE,ICSE than MIT. This rubbish is becoming an intl blog entry whereas 5-10 among us will get in."
I second you dear indian. Now personal message to you-
