Posted by: Oh. My. God. on March 15, 2008 12:40 PM
@Rejected
Here's the message:
On behalf of the Admissions Committee, it is my pleasure to offer you admission to the MIT Class of 2012. You stood out as one of the most talented and promising students in one of the most competitive applicant pools in the history of the Institute. Your commitment to personal excellence and principled goals has convinced us that you will both contribute to our diverse community and thrive within our academic environment. We think that you and MIT are a great match.
You’ll likely have offers of admission from many fine schools, but we hope that you’ll choose to enroll at MIT. You have until May 1, 2008 to let us know if you’ll call MIT home for the next four years – please visit your MyMIT account to complete our official Reply Form. Until then, we look forward to building our relationship with you and to helping you to get to know us better. In the coming weeks, we’ll be in touch via phone, email, and web.
Many of our students believe that the campus visit experience was the deciding factor in their choice to enroll at MIT. Therefore, we hope you will be our guest at Campus Preview Weekend (CPW), held on the MIT campus from Thursday, April 10 through Sunday, April 13. CPW is an excellent way to experience MIT student life firsthand. You’ll go to classes, eat lots of food, join hallway conversations, and meet your future classmates. We encourage your parents to attend as well; please see the enclosed CPW invitation for details.
If you can’t come to CPW, please try to visit campus before May 1. To make arrangements to stay overnight with an undergraduate host, simply complete the online request form in your MyMIT account. If you are unable to visit campus but eager to get to know MIT, you’ll have the chance to speak with a current undergraduate soon; an MIT student will be calling you in April.
And now for the requisite fine print – I must remind you that this offer of admission is contingent upon your completing the school year with flying colors. Have fun with the rest of your senior year, but please keep your grades up!
I hope you’ll agree with us that MIT is the perfect place to prepare for your future. As a member of our community, you’ll join builders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and humanitarians. Together, you will make all the difference in a world that desperately needs you.
Many congratulations, and once again, welcome to MIT! (Now stop reading this and go celebrate. :-)
Sincerely,
Stuart Schmill
Interim Director of Admissions
P.S. Don't forget to visit the Campus Preview Weekend web site to begin making your travel plans!

Aditi '12, you must be having a visa then (?). If I am right, there's something sort of 90 days rule, which might just take the CPW away from me.

Admitted!!
Dear MIT Committee Members:
Thanks for your notification of March 15th. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your rejection at this time.
This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of schools, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.
Despite your outstanding record and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my current career needs.
Consequently, I will begin taking classes as a undergraduate student in your electrical engineering department.
I look forward to seeing you then.
If you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at george.smith@mit.edu.
Sincerely, George

@ viral modi -
For a variety of different reasons, a small number of applicants get called / emailed / stalked at PetSmart, but this is rare. Most people find out via decisions.mit.edu.

Keep it up!Let's keep an eye on those at MIT who would be trying to make the globe a better place while we strive to do likewise in whichever instituion we land up! God BLess!

Best wishes to all the accepted. My daughter was defered and now she didn't get in. We kind of prepared as a family for any news. We do know that if you are from a certain background from where, the most smart and predominant pool of applicants apply, it would be virtually impossible to get in if one can't match with them closely. Although colleges say there is no quota system, one wouldn't want to see 1500 people from the same back ground. Thanks MIT for keeping this process exciting.

I GOT IN MIT!!! Yayy
Posted by: Anonymous on March 15, 2008 05:00 PM
OMG. I'm so glad that I got into MIT. I feel weird saying "I" like I did it alone. So I'll thank most, if not all of the people that helped me along the way. I thoroughly and sincerely thank my parents, my teachers (especially the recommendation writers!!!), my interviewer, and last but certainly not least, the MIT admissions staff. This is such a wonderful feeling!!! Thanks!!! Anyway I'd like to give a BIG shout out to MITES '07. Without that program and the resulting experience that I gained as a quasi-MIT student, I would have nearly nothing to talk about in my essays. Speaking of MITES '07, thanks Dr. C for all of your help. Congrats to everyone else who got in, and good luck and best wishes to those who didn't. With that said... GO MIT CLASS OF 2012!!!!! WHOOOOO!!!! GO BEAVERS!!!!!!

@ Rik: Wow, I just realized how much I'm confusing people.......I didn't get in as an applicant from India....I live in USA and got in for EA....what I was saying was that I'm from India......because I would never say I'm from anywhere else ^__^. But wow, that's a LOT of people!!!!!!! I think before this, there were only four people from India in the Undergrad program.....

Posted by: LouisA on March 15, 2008 09:40 PM
Haha! You guys are creating so much confusion... US citizens and permanent residents don't count as Indians (or any other national identity)... The MIT admission process considers you an X-ian applicant if and only if you exclusively have a passport of X. Anyway, congratulations! You'll be having a uber-awesome CPW in April... Waiting for the arrival of '12s.

I think the best part of the acceptance is the reaction it gets from family--my grandma and my mom cried, and my grandpa didn't even know what MIT was heehee. I found out while getting a hair cut. My mom was getting her hair shampooed when I told her so she kind of squirmed like an elated turtle for a couple minutes with the back of her head in the sink. I believe I should end this with an emphatic W00T!

Are you guys sure there wasn't a clever hack going on? Arrr...I'm so happy and so nervous--does anyone know if people plan hacks on admissions decisions??
OH MY GOD I GOT IN

Oh, I forgot--
Thanks MIT, and thanks everyone who helped!!
And congratulations everyone!

I still check back every couple hours expecting to wake up.
Btw, did anyone else have nightmares the night before about being rejected?

I don't know if the guestbook is yet available to all RD admits, but as soon as it is, I would definitely recommend making your page. It makes it a lot easier to find other people.
Congrats to all of you, once again! I look forward to meeting you a CPW and in August!

Guys,
I am a hopeful 2013 and i congratulate you on your great achievement and i would like to know if all of you scored 2400 or 1600 in SAT 2
and also in SAT 1.
So that i too can work towards the right score till i have time. It would be very nice if you could give me some tips on the application essay.
My email id is xavi669@gmail.com I thank you for your help and gesture. And congratulations again
Posted by: Hopeful '13 on March 16, 2008 11:49 AM
^^^ MIT requires a 2600. This means you must do so well that you get extra credit lol...jk sry i had to. In actuality, MIT doesnt care once you paass a certain threshold...I'd say somewhere around 2100 to be safe. Congrats again everyone!!! See you at CPW.
Posted by: OmarA on March 16, 2008 11:55 AM
So are there any Ohio acceptances?
Posted by: Anonymous on March 16, 2008 11:57 AM
I don't think scores that high are entirely necessary. There are better things to work on than an extra 100 points overall on the SAT.
Posted by: Anonymous on March 16, 2008 11:57 AM
@Hopeful '13
I actually scored over 9000 on both the SAT II and SAT I. It's hard to do, I know, but if you get your power level up, you'll do it. Anyway, this is how it went down: 9000 on every SAT II test = 9000*12? + 9000*3 parts on the SAT I > 9000. That makes me over 9000. Nobody can refuse over 9000.
(Seriously, though, go look at the statistics for last year's class and this year's class, and aim for the median score or above. My guess is that the essays/interview are equally if not more important than the scores anyway.)
Posted by: Will '12 on March 16, 2008 11:58 AM
@Will'12
Do you mean collectively you scored over 9000 on all the SAT tests you took?? (A little puzzled)
Posted by: Aamir on March 16, 2008 12:31 PM
lol aamir he was being sarcastic
Posted by: lol on March 16, 2008 12:41 PM
@ '13 hopeful : SATs are really not everything. I'm am/was an international applicant(oh crap I'm not an applicant anymore now am I ? w00t!). I didn't do all that well on the SATs. I still made it. I guess that just goes to show that MIT really cares about whether you're really passionate about whatever it is you want/do (physics in my case)
So all the best :)
Lets hope we'll see you there next year
Posted by: Aditi on March 16, 2008 12:47 PM
@Aamir
I didn't realize that that was actually possible to do until you asked me if I really did, haha. I didn't take anywhere near that number of tests; I'm not that crazy :) Rest assured, though, that the score in my heart is well over 9000. My brain just doesn't always match. (PS: The Over 9000 thing is an Internet meme--Google it!)
@Hopeful '13
Read my comment to Aamir. Then, disregard it, and SCORE OVER 9000.

any other Austin, Tx people?
Posted by: Marty'12 on March 16, 2008 12:50 PM
It's just when add up 800's from all tests you can go over 9000 so I was wondering... and believe me there are those people out there who would try or even do them all!!!
Posted by: Aamir on March 16, 2008 12:55 PM
:-D
hard to believe that after getting deferred I got in but it feels so wonderful!
see you all at CPW!
Posted by: Steve on March 16, 2008 12:56 PM
I love the PetSmart story, as well. Mine was similar in the getting my decision at work and running around telling everyone who was happy because it was such a big deal to me but had no real clue what MIT was...I was supposed to be allowed to use my boss's laptop at her first break but she forgot it (how when I'd bugged her about it daily for a week, I've no idea) and I had to get special permission to use the main reception area computer, while the receptionist was using it, so we kept minimizing each other's windows while she was on the phone with a customer...and I'll conclude this sentance here before my Freshman year English teacher disowns me.
Eek.
Posted by: Lainers on March 16, 2008 01:10 PM
Congratulations, everyone!
I'm EA, so I've been waiting for all the crazycool Admitted perks to kick in, and now that everyone's accepted I feel like the rest of the crew FINALLY made it to the party.
CPW will be wondrous - hold on to your hats.

@Marty: I'm an Austin, TX acceptee =) Do I have you on FB yet? (linked my profile)
Posted by: Vivi on March 16, 2008 02:50 PM
Yes. I totally had nightmares the night [or rather week] before. Then I was in such shock that I checked back at least fifty times. I truly didn't believe it until I realized after the 50th time that the message was still the same.
I keep randomly grinning.
And I burst out laughing from sheer joy!

Posted by: kayla '12 on March 16, 2008 04:50 PM
@Tim-baugh: I live near Boulder.
You can search some of posts about the admissions process. I think Ben liked to one in his last post. Basically, you should have competitive scores (like 700 or above-ish), but killing yourself for an extra 100 points isn't going to get you in. Spend the time on something you love. Don't try and do what you think colleges are looking for. They want you, and what you love to do, so just follow that.

Hey there, so yeah, my SAT Is were far from perfect: 590 Wr, 690 CR, 780 Math. My SAT IIs were 800 Math 2 and 770 Physics. Scores dont really count for as much as people think. Personality, drive, and potential, thats where you can win big. Dont sweat the nitty gritty, dont try to shape yourself to MIT, let MIT shape itself to you, and if it fits, I'll see you next year.

Cam,
MIT will arrange a host for us, so lodging is free, as is food, which will be provided either at the dining halls, or at events.
Transportation to CPW is not paid for by MIT.
Hope this helps!

I am just an alum browsing through the site.
Congratulations to all of you.
I remember bouncing off the walls when I heard I'm in (scarily some 11 years ago).
It's an opportunity to learn a lot and to make life-long friends. I made friends from Japan to California and Russia to South Africa.
Enjoy and rejoice.

this will be the first time that i'm actually posting my real name on this site... But i thought this moment was momentous(ha!)enough to do so. Neways, I'd like to thank the entire MIT admissions staff for considering me as they did and admitting me, even though I really thought I had no chance of actually getting in. I am ecstatic and in a state of perpetual reverie and euphia (if that makes sense). Now I'll be in a school full of pretty talented kids and it is going to be more difficult to continue to get the grades that I get now and that I'll have to devote much more of myself to my studies.
@Cynthia: I'm fully Haitian but think I'll become a citizen in time to vote...
By the way a wonder who guys think should be the next president
Posted by: Everson on March 17, 2008 06:11 PM
@Will'12: I'm making the Caltech/MIT decision too, but I'm definitely thinking MIT. I'm from the northeast(ish), and plus, I go to a school that has 665 kids in my graduating class. So, I'm into bigger schools. Plus, Boston rocks my (red) socks!
I'm so bummed that my orchestra trip is during CPW! Oh well, Disney World is pretty cool too.
Congrats everyone!
Posted by: Dot on March 17, 2008 08:05 PM
WOW! I got accpepted at MIT! I guess this is a little late to post, but congratulations to everyone who got in, this is a great honor. And don't worry waitlisters, there's always some people who don't end up attending-there's always a few Caltechers above. And Will '12, 9000? I thought my 8570 was good...
Posted by: Josh on March 17, 2008 08:08 PM
Congratulations everyone! I never thought I would be accepted, this has truly made my senior year amazing!
Posted by: Katie on March 17, 2008 08:12 PM
I didn't get accepted :( Well, good luck to all of you who did get accepted. I bow in honor to your superiority.
BTW, to the person who asked about SAT scores, I was an i'tl applicant who got almost all 800's on my SAT II and was in the top 5% for my ACT. Lol, I'm still quite surprised I scored higher than 99% of Americans in the English section even though I come from a non-English speaking country.
But as you can see, test scores aren't everything. I think I also scored well on the passion scale and essays and recommendations. Two major points where I think I screwed up:
1. Overplanning and not looking like I'm being myself
2. Annoyed at least two MIT bloggers (possibly including Ben) :P
Posted by: Muz on March 17, 2008 08:24 PM
Yeah about the SAT scores, I honestly can't remember what I got... all over 700s but I really can't remember...which kind of goes to show, I think that while test scores are important, what's more important is, as Muz said above, just being passionate and being yourself in your application. Most of the people here have great test scores, so my advice to you would be to show the admissions office that you're more than just some numbers. :)

@Muz: I have been accepted to the Class of 2012 as an international student, and though I have posted in my own name above, this time I will chose Anonymity, because you have raised a sensitive issue and I would not like to appear to be holding anybody's brief in public.
Firstly, I understand how disappointed you must feel. I also assume that your bow to "our superiority" is an example of (good-humored) sarcasm, because you then provide an overview of your stats and other accomplishments which obviously indicate that you were a highly qualified candidate in the first place. You need not take a bow.
The point is about your thinking that you did not gain acceptance for annoying a couple of MIT bloggers, including, possibly, Ben. Now, this is something difficult to believe, and this is certainly not the correct manner of critical self-introspection. If you have read the blogs in the past, you should have known that your application has been discussed and reviewed by approximately 12 persons. Rest assured that no single Admissions staff member (or even an "annoyed couple") can use such an extraneous factor (such as your posts on these blogs) to keep you off the admit pile. Why they would at all want to do it is another matter. Their job is to choose the "best" class possible (in terms of fit, of course) from the applications and credentials that come in the applicants' folders. Their job, certainly, is not to factor in how you behave on these blogs in the eventual admission decisions.
I really hope even now you are "not looking like you are being yourself", and that this is just an off-the-cuff remark made without thinking. My only advice: please remember the essay prompt A, take this "as an experience which, at the time, really felt like “the end of the world” — but had it not happened, you would not be who you are today". You are welcome to discuss value in the negative, but to think of yourself as "inferior" or to psychoanalyse MIT bloggers
