"MIT Regular Action Deadline"

MIT's regular action deadline is January 1.

The Office of Admissions is currently closed for the holidays, and is not accepting emails or answering phone calls (and I am on vacation!). The office will reopen on Monday, January 4th.

However, with the RA deadline fast approaching, I'd like to use this entry to answer some of the common deadline-time questions. There are many answers already here on the site -- for example, about standardized test requirements or statistics. And below, I've provided answers to some additional FAQs:

  • The deadline is January 1, meaning you can click "submit" on your application any time on January 1 or before. (I strongly discourage waiting until the last minute, though)
  • It is perfectly fine if, through no fault of your own, your school forms (teacher recommendations, secondary school report, transcript) come in after the January 1 deadline. We are much more understanding of and flexible with late documents from schools than with late documents from the applicant.
  • The MyMIT Tracking is up-to-date (while the Admissions Office is closed, the Records Office is working hard), but please recognize that processing can take 2 weeks. You do not need to worry at this time about documents that are not showing on MyMIT; we currently have a backlog of materials in our processing center, and expect to have that backlog into January. Do not send a second copy of any document at this time. Also, you do not need to call MIT Admissions at this time to check on any such documents (there is a time for this later). Do not worry about materials that have not yet shown up on MyMIT Tracking.
  • Please note that you do not need to express mail or overnight any part of your application.
  • The teacher evaluations, secondary school report and transcripts must be sent through the mail (though we can accept electronic documents through Naviance/eDocs for schools that use this system only). Make sure everything has your name and an identifying piece of information such as your date of birth.
  • For teacher recommendations and secondary school reports, we prefer our form, but will accept your school's forms, the NACAC forms, or the Common App forms.
  • Any application materials being mailed, including recommendation letters, should be sent to: MIT Office of Admissions; 77 Massachusetts Avenue; Room 3-108; Cambridge, MA 02139; USA. It need not have any special code on the envelope. All application materials, though, should have your full name and other identifying information, such as date of birth.
  • If you are having credit card problems, please email applicationpart1 at mit dot edu. If problems delay your application past January 1, we will extend the deadline for you due to any problems on our end.
  • We are happy to accept fee waivers for any student (foreign or domestic) who needs one. Using a fee waiver will not negatively impact your admission. You may use the SAT Fee Waiver, the NACAC Fee Waiver, or a letter from a school official detailing your situation. We will accept other fee waiver forms as well. Generally speaking, if you are in tough financial shape and make a good faith effort to inform us of your circumstances, we will waive your fee.
  • Listing awards that you have received is sufficient. You do not need to mail us certificates. Do not lie or be deceitful, though.
  • We are aware that our application strips some formatting. We apologize, but everyone is on the same footing.
  • We believe the word limits as stated for the essay questions in the application should be sufficient to answer the questions. You may have noted, though, that the application will not automatically cut off your answer at the word limit. You may choose to send in the essay at a length that exceeds our stated limit; it is your choice. We do not auto-reject candidates because of word length, but we believe the word limit specified usually should be sufficient. If your essay is greater than the word limit, I would recommend considering cutting down your essay; it's your call whether to submit it as it currently is, though. If your answer is so long that the preview-function view of the answer shrinks the font, then I definitely recommend shortening your response.
  • There are often many questions about the self-reported grades form. We ask that applicants in US school systems do their best to accurately and completely fill this out. Be sure to include your current year courses. Be sure that your self-reported grades match what is on your transcript. If you have taken college, online, or summer courses, you should include these classes and grades as well. If you do not attend an American-style school, you do not need to fill out the self-reported grades form.
  • If you need to update your application after you submit it, the best -- and recommended -- mechanism is the Midyear Report, an online form which will be available in about a month. On this form, you will also provide updated/semester/midyear grades and any changes in your coursework. You will also be able to provide information about any new awards or anything else you want us to know about.
  • January is the last testing date that can be seen by the Admissions Committee (February will not be seen). If you will be taking the January test, you obviously don't have the scores yet to write down in your application. This is okay. Just be sure that when you take the test, you designate MIT to receive the scores; other than this, you do not need to do anything special. Please do not rush report your scores. We require either SAT Reasoning Test OR ACT Plus Writing (or TOEFL) AND 2 SAT Subject Tests (one in math, one in science). At this time we are not considering the SAT (or ACT) Writing test. For the tests we do consider, we we only use the scores that make you look best, and we do abide by Score Choice.
  • The deadline to request an interview was December 10th, and has now passed. While highly recommended, the interview is not a required part of the application. You are welcome to request an interview from your Educational Counselor (EC) after the deadline, but do not expect that your request will be granted. If you have already interviewed with your EC, or have scheduled your interview for the near future, you are all set. Do not worry if your interview report has not yet appeared on your MyMIT Tracking; the deadline for ECs to submit their reports has not yet arrived. If you wish, you may now fill out the conducted interview form and we will be sure to get the interview report.
  • Regular action results will be released in mid-March.

@Donald: It would probably be best to report these changes in the Midyear Report.

@Lindsay: The Midyear Report is only for students being considered during Regular Action. EA admits (as well as RA admits) will need to complete the Final Grade Report.

I am an international student, and I was going to take the January TOEFL test, but for personal reasons, I was unable to register for the test. Now, the only dates available for me to take the test are in March 2010. As I read, any test beyond January will not be consider; therefore, I would like to know if there is anything that I could do to solve this issue.

I think there is nothing you can do. I've faced the same situation, and the solution was registering for the January SAT Reasoning. If you already took the SAT Reasoning, there's nothing to worry about. The TOEFL scores aren't required.

See if you can take the January SAT as a Standby tester. I think that may be an alternative.

Thanks a lot for the information. It answered many questions that had been bothering me. I do have one left unanswered though. It has only been a year since I moved to the States. Therefore, I am lacking in a couple of required social studies credits. I am scheduled to take CBEs (Credit By Examination) for all those courses in January. I am not sure if I should inform the admission office through mail about this or send my mid-year report a bit late so as to include the results. In either case I just want to let the admission office know that I will graduate with all the required courses.

It would be of great help if you could reply as soon as possible.

Hi Matt, I am applying to MIT as a freshman for fall 2010, and I am interested in participating in varsity swimming at MIT.

However, I am not on my school's varsity swim team, and do not know my times for any events, such as the 200 m breaststroke. I am only a recreational swimmer who wants to try out for the varsity swim team at college.
My question is on the application form, do I still indicate that I would like to participate in varsity swimming (part 2 section 8) in the selection box, but refrain from completing the varsity athletics form? Or should I indicate that I would like to participate in varsity swimming and fill out the varsity athletics form but leave the athletic portion blank?

Hey Matt, I am applying as a freshman for fall 2010, and I want to submit extra materials that do not fit anywhere on the application. To be more specific, I own a business and would like to submit some samples from the portfolio that I keep. Most of the materials would be spreadsheets and graphs. Should I email this as an attachment, fax a printout of the materials, or mail a printout of the materials?

Franky, you can only apply as a freshman. As stated on http://web.mit.edu/admissions/transfer/about.html , "We do not, however, admit students who will have finished less than one year of college or will be within three semesters of acquiring a bachelor's degree at the time of transfer."

What I am worried about is my SAT scores. I took the tests on december 5 and got 720 in math 2 and 730 in physics. I could do much better but I had my second term exams the same month and I had to tackle both....Now are they enough or should I take the tests again? Give the marks that you already have (from Oct) in your application. Matt said that they'll consider the scores that make you look best so it's not a big deal if you do better than in October because they only look at the official scores anyway. I'd think that the scores in the application are just for reference.

If you look at the statistics for the middle 50% of admitted students this year, you'll see that you're in that range with your physics and just below it with your math. This represents the interquartile range though so that means that 25% of people scored below 740 in math (the lower quartile). My advice is, don't stress yourself out about SAT grades too much because there's more to an application than test scores. If you are satisfied with your scores and think they're ok then don't re-do the exams. There's an additional information form in the Application part 2 that you can use to tell the admissions committee about your situation. I recommend that you use it.

@Lisa
The MIT Admissions board seems like really understanding people so I'm sure they won't throw a fit about your application being a few days late. Send it via FedEx if you can. They're super efficient. Also, about that award, if you applied online and haven't submitted your part 2 yet, then just fill it in there, if not, Matt said that you don't need to send in certification so just wait till the Mid-Year report is available and list it there.

Are interviews conducted after Jan 1 accepted for admissions? I contacted my EC the first week in December and was told to call back after Dec 21 when he would have a less packed schedule. I left several messages for him at his office and paged him, but received no responses. When I finally got in touch with him by email, his schedule was full until after Jan 1. He's still willing to interview me, but didn't know if it would be allowed.

I'm a permanent resident in the United States. This means that I have to submit a copy of my Green Card to the Office of Admissions.

Is it possible to e-mail a scanned copy of my green card? If yes, to whom should I send it?

E-mailing the card would be much faster than sending it via regular mail and I would have no more application worries!

On another note, I was wondering if was it was possible for the technical support team to center the webpage. I am currently using a 1440 x 900 screen resolution and the webpage is slammed up against the left side of my monitor. I'm sorry but this is giving me a major headache.

To center the webpage simply add this property to the first table tag's properties.

I just send my recommendations and school report! It was incredibly hard to get everything together, especially because my counselor had no idea what was going on, or how to fill our the forms. It is definitely a BAD idea to procrastinate.
By the way, I am a U.S citizen, living in another country, but for some reason or another I do not have a SSN, and I need it for financial aid, I have already requested one, but it probably wont arrive any time soon. Can I still apply for financial aid? What alternatives do I have??

11.59 pm EST could be a different time in your country. Just check it out on the following site:

For e.g. 11.59 pm EST 1st Jan means around 9-10 am 2nd Jan in my country. So just check it out. If you still have any problems you could contact the admissions office by phone or email.

Hello. I sent the teacher evaluation forms and secondary school report through Express Mail Service of Turkish PTT on 19th of Dec. In the online mail tracking system of Turkish PTT, it says: "unsuccessful item delivery attempt". Is this due to the closure of the admission office? What should I do? Thanks :)

You may pick up the item at the Post Office indicated on the notice, go to www.usps.com/redelivery, or call 800-ASK-USPS to arrange for redelivery. If this item is unclaimed after five days then it will be returned to the sender." They do not arrange any redelivery until 4th of Jan and MIT opens the office on the 4th. I will mail Mr Fish. I have the same resolution as yours but I'm quite comfortable with it. you can however change CSS styles for an element on a page using the IE Developer Toolbar if you use IE8, just press F12 and the rest is self explanatory.

If you use Firefox there are several extensions and addons that could accomplish the same result, for example, There's Stylish which allows you to use your own stylesheet for a website.

know what, i gave my boards in 2009. i had actually missed the deadline to apply last year, which is why im applying this year..
they ask for the transcript of the latest marks..so i guess that'll be the preboards or semesters..
and btw im not really sure when you can send your board results, cos they come in may, and MIT asks for ur midyear report in Feb-March. So I'd advise you to contact the admissions office for this..

I was deferred from early action, and I heard we can supplement our file with extra papers/essays/creative things that we have done. Is it still possible to do that after the Jan. 1st deadline? I will most likely be sending in a supplementary essay within the week-- is that okay to do?

The Mid-Year Report offers you the chance to update MIT admissions on any new things that happened, projects done, creative things .. etc
But I don't know if (within the week) is possible.

I'm an international student, I submitted my application a few days ago, but I didn't include the names of the teachers who will do the evaluations because I had a hard time getting in contact with them. I'm currently not in my native country. I managed to get a letter of recommendation from my school director, which might get to MIT after January 1. Do you think that will make a difference? I will send the teacher evaluations in mid January.

Hi ....I needed some advice with my secondary school forms...I sent them in long ago in December ..And today when i submitted the application it told me that my form had not been processed. Just submitted my app. It wasn't easy, you know, clicking the submit button and all.
It is on the MIT site that the Test which makes looks better on the app. of international applicants submitting both the SAT Reasoning and the TOEFL would be used. Please does anyone have an idea about the one they'd likely consider for me: A 1970 in SAT I; comprising 7 something(7**) in Writing and Math and a five something(5**) in reading, and a 105 in iBT- TOEFL?

You are all right in TOEFL, I am not sure about SAT 1 though. But its stated that your high scores will be considered, (means your TOEFL scores) which in my opinion are perfectly fine.

Also pray for me friends, I have to take the TOEFL, but the problem is I can't devote myself fully to its preparation for there is so much on school. I hope I score good on TOEFL.

Question..

Say someone has a GPA on the lower side in the beginning of high school due to family issues, but manages to bring it up to (near perfect) for his/her junior year and the midyear report grades are straight As. I know that MIT will take that into consideration; but my question is are you (mr./ms admissions officer) going to consider the latter grades as an indication of his/her academic ability or the overall thing.. Also, I would like to add, that this applicant has very high scores on the SAT (in fact, I think he passes your 75%ile for reading and writing) so, if you could please :]

I have one little quandary. In answer the questions which asked me to describe the world whence I come (12b), I wrote exactly 250 words, and yet the application did indeed shrink my font in order to accommodate the text. Oh no! Is the blogosphere going to implode? Will my plants wither and die? Will chocolate oranges never taste the same?

you'll get a mail from MIT stating your application has been sumitted.. so as long as you get that you should be fine.. if not just contact the admissions office.. they should be able to help you out

It might be a bit late for Ayush to follow that advice as the Stanford deadline has passed too.

Stanford might be a high-ranking institute, but like Harvard, Yale, and many others, compared to MIT they are ordinary.

Hello,

I have applied to MIT for freshman admissions, and I have collected the required forms and documentation from the high school I am now attending besides my high school transcript. I am an international student, and I reside in VA.I tried to register for the TOEFL and the SAT Subject Test, I was succesful to get a seat available to take the January SAT Subject Test, but I was unable to register for the january TOEFL test. I do not know how that affects my application since I have only a few ways to prove my knowledge. As I told my EC interviewer, I am an autodidact, and I have been teaching myself physics and math for years. Hence, I do not have any document or trascript from any school before I arrived to the United States or previous the high school I am now attending. my EC interviewer recommended to summit some of my work related to some research I have done on my own. Now I am working on a theory of gravitation, which is based upon theoretical descritions on gravitation. I wonder if I have to turn in some of my work to MIT in order to fill my lack of academic records and/or tests.
